Donaldson lifts A's over Phillies with 10th-inning HR

Sep 22, 2014 - 3:02 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Donaldson's two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning sent Oakland to an 8-6 over Philadelphia in the rubber match of a three-game interleague set.

Nate Freiman reached with a one-out single against Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (0-1) and Donaldson then powered a pitch over the wall just to the left of center to end the contest.

Sean Doolittle (2-4) struck out four over two perfect relief innings.

Geovany Soto drove in three runs, while Adam Dunn, Brandon Moss and Josh Reddick added an RBI apiece for the Athletics, who maintained a half-game lead on Kansas City for the top wild card spot in the American League.

"These guys in this locker room are giving everything they have," Donaldson said.

Scott Kazmir was lit up for six runs on 11 hits despite nine strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

Marlon Byrd doubled twice and knocked in three for the Phillies, with Ben Revere, Carlos Ruiz and Freddy Galvis adding an RBI each.

A.J. Burnett departed after 4 1/3 frames, charged with six runs on three hits with six walks.

"He was just off the plate. Wasn't able to work ahead in the count," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said about Burnett.

Byrd's RBI double staked the Phillies to a lead five batters in, but Oakland came back with three in the home half on an RBI single from Dunn, run-scoring double by Moss and a fly to left from Reddick.

In the third, Chase Utley singled, Ryan Howard doubled and both came in on Byrd's double to deep center for a 3-3 game.

Soto's bases-loaded walk in the home half put the A's back on top, then a two- out RBI double from Ruiz in the fourth forged another deadlock.

Soto struck again, in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double, yet the Phils countered once more a half-frame later on a run-scoring triple by Galvis followed by an RBI hit by Revere which made it 6-6.

Oakland had runners on first and third with one out in the bottom of the ninth and failed to end the contest, as Soto and Eric Sogard both fanned.

Game Notes

Donaldson is the only player in the majors who has struck three walk-off home runs ... A's shortstop Jed Lowrie left the game in the sixth inning with a left foot contusion ... Byrd's three RBI were his most since June 18, when he also knocked in three during a 10-5 Phils' win in Atlanta ... Both teams are in action on Monday, as Oakland continues its playoff push by welcoming the Angels, and Philadelphia stays on the road to face Miami.
