Final
Bassitt, White Sox blank Tigers
Sep 23, 2014 - 5:41 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Bassitt fired 7 2/3 scoreless innings and the Chicago White Sox blanked the Detroit Tigers, 2-0, in the opener of a three-game set.Bassitt (1-1) allowed six hits and walked one to pick up his first major league win, while Tyler Flowers smacked a two-run homer in the second inning for the White Sox, who have won three of their last four games.
"The first win always means a lot, but being so close to home and having my friends and family here makes it even better," Bassit said.
Jake Petricka recorded the final four outs for his 14th save of the season.
Kyle Lobstein (1-1) surrendered two runs on five hits and a walk over seven frames for Detroit, which has dropped four of its last six contests.
"Teams don't roll over, they have a job to do. They're trying to prove something to themselves," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said of the lowly White Sox.
The Tigers are one game ahead of Kansas City for first place in the AL Central following the Royals' 2-0 win over Cleveland. The Indians held on for a 4-3 10-inning win earlier in the day to conclude a rain-suspended game from last month.
Carlos Sanchez hit a two-out double and Flowers followed by ripping his two- run shot over the wall in left-center field.
Detroit, which finished 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base, had opportunities to get on the scoreboard in the first, fourth and sixth innings.
Miguel Cabrera whacked a two-out double and Victor Martinez was hit by a pitch before J.D. Martinez flied out in the opening frame. Victor Martinez was stranded at second in the fourth after Alex Avila struck out and Austin Romine grounded out.
The Tigers squandered Victor Martinez's leadoff double in the sixth. Groundouts by J.D. Martinez and Nick Castellanos preceded Avila's strikeout to end that threat.
