Stults pitches Padres over Rockies

Sep 23, 2014 - 5:18 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Stults pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings and the San Diego Padres continued their winning ways with a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Monday.

Stults (8-17) would have owned the worst record in baseball with a loss. Instead, the 34-year-old remains tied with Philadelphia's A.J. Burnett for the most losses in the majors after allowing seven hits with five strikeouts. He pitched into the seventh inning without giving up a run for the third time this season.

Rene Rivera doubled in the lone run of the contest for San Diego, winners in five straight.

Rockies starter Tyler Matzek (6-11) pitched well in defeat, fanning eight in six innings of one-run ball. Colorado had won a season-high six consecutive games, totaling 61 runs during that stretch.

"His fastball was real good," Colorado manager Walt Weiss said of Matzek. "Mid 90's fastball with some sink. And a great changeup. He's done a hell of a job for us."

Jedd Gyorko drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the first inning following groundouts by Yangervis Solarte and Cameron Maybin. Rene Rivera plated the game's only run with an opposite field liner to the wall in right-center.

Colorado threatened in the fifth inning, loading the bases with two outs for Josh Rutledge. Rutledge worked a full count before swinging through a Stults fastball for the inning-ending strikeout.

"The real big one was getting Rutledge with the bases loaded," said Padres manager Bud Black. "That was real critical with a 1-0 game."

Matzek matched his counterpart, striking out Rymer Liriano with the bases juiced and two outs in the sixth.

Kevin Quackenbush pitched around a two-out single to nail down his sixth save.

Rockies first baseman Justin Morneau went 2-for-4, upping his batting average to .320. He leads Pittsburgh's Josh Harrison by .002 for the National League batting title. Teammate Michael Cuddyer won the batting title last season.

Colorado outhit San Diego, 10-5. This is only the second time in Rockies history that they got shutout despite double digit hits ... Morneau improved to 12-for-25 at Petco Park this season ... The Rockies went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10.
