Mets down Astros to end season

Sep 29, 2014 - 12:55 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Lucas Duda hit a two-run home run and drove in four as the New York Mets closed out the season with an 8-3 win over the Houston Astros.

Ruben Tejada also hit a two-run home run while Daniel Murphy scored twice for the Mets (79-83), who won their final two games of the season.

Bartolo Colon (15-13) allowed three runs on eight hits over six innings to get the win.

"From a team standpoint we're not where we need to be or where we want to be," Duda said. "Me personally I think I took a step forward in the right direction."

Max Stassi drove in two runs for the Astros (70-92), who lost five of six to end the season. Nick Tropeano (1-3) allowed four runs on six hits over five innings.

Murphy's sac fly in the first inning staked the Mets to a 1-0 lead, but the Astros answered in the second on a Stassi RBI ground-rule double.

Matt den Dekker's run-scoring single in the third staked the Mets to a 2-1 lead, but the Astros again tied the game in the fifth on Jose Altuve's RBI single.

Altuve finished the season with a .341 average to lead the majors and win the American League batting title.

"I'm pretty excited," Altuve said of the title. "After the game, (my teammates) were happy for me and they (congratulated) me. It made my season way better."

New York, though, went up for good in the fifth as Bobby Abreu, who played his final game as he announced he will retire, singled and Murphy followed with a walk. Duda then hit a double to chase home both runners for a 4-2 lead.

A Stassi RBI single in the sixth made it a one-run game, but New York put the contest away in the eighth.

Murphy doubled to leadoff and Duda followed with his 30th home run of the season. After Wilmer Flores doubled, Tejada hit his fifth homer of the season for an 8-3 lead.
