A-Rod homers but Yankees fall to Jays

Apr 10, 2015 - 4:04 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The Toronto Blue Jays jumped on CC Sabathia early and beat the New York Yankees 6-3 in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Daniel Norris (1-0) earned his first career win by pitching effectively into the sixth. The rookie left-hander scattered three runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings and served up home runs to Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira.

"I felt good getting into the sixth," Norris said. "Take away (the home runs) and it was a pretty good night."

Rodriguez's first homer since Sept. 20, 2013, went for naught because the Blue Jays plated four runs off Sabathia in the second inning and held on to take a rare series in the Bronx.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a solo homer, Jose Reyes went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and rookie Miguel Castro closed out the win with a perfect ninth.

Sabathia (0-1), who was limited to eight starts last season because of a knee injury, was charged with five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits. He struck out eight and did not issue a walk.

The veteran lefty retired the side in order in the first inning but gave up four consecutive singles to start the second. Kevin Pillar's bases-loaded hit knocked in Encarnacion, groundouts from Steve Tolleson and Devon Travis each plated runs, and Reyes capped the four-run rally with an RBI base hit.

John Ryan Murphy doubled and scored on Didi Gregorius' first hit as a Yankee in the fifth, but New York handed the run back in the next half-inning when Carlos Beltran's throw to third got away from Chase Headley. Josh Donaldson tried advancing from first to third on Danny Valencia's single through the right side, and Beltran's throw caromed off Donaldson and toward the dugout. Sabathia was not backing up third on the play and Donaldson scored easily.

Rodriguez led off the home sixth with a long-awaited homer, and Teixeira followed two batters later with another solo shot to cut New York's deficit to 5-3.

"I felt like I needed a Google map to get around the bases," Rodriguez joked. "It's been a long, long time. It certainly felt good."

Roberto Osuna relieved Norris later in the frame and stranded runners on second and third by striking out pinch-hitter Stephen Drew, and Encarnacion got one of the runs back with a no-doubter to left in the eighth.

Castro, a 20-year-old phenom from the Dominican Republic, hurled a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his first career save.

Game Notes

Rodriguez's 655th career home run moved him within five of Willie Mays for fourth place all-time ... The Yankees went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position ... Toronto came into the series 3-20 in its previous 23 games in the Bronx ... The Yankees host the Red Sox for three games this weekend ... Toronto stays on the road for three games at Baltimore starting on Friday.
