Kendrick looks to keep rolling against Cubs
Apr 11, 2015 - 11:04 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Kendrick tries to follow up a tremendous Opening Day effort on Saturday when the unbeaten Colorado Rockies continue their three-game series with the Chicago Cubs at Coors Field.Kendrick received 10 runs of support against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, but really only needed one, as he scattered seven hits over seven scoreless innings to nail down the win. He also struck out six without walking a batter.
"I just came in here wanting to do what I can -- what I did in Philly -- make my starts, give my team a chance to win," Kendrick said. "You don't think about the results. You want to go out there and execute pitches."
Kendrick has faced the Cubs six times (5 starts) and is 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA.
Chicago will counter with righty Jason Hammel, who re-signed with the Cubs this winter after being traded by them near last year's trade deadline.
Hammel signed with the Cubs last February and was 8-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 17 starts before being shipped to Oakland with Jeff Samardzija on July 5. He went just 2-6 with the Athletics, finishing the campaign 10-11 overall with a 3.47 ERA in 30 outings.
Colorado is off to its first 4-0 start since 1995, as Justin Morneau homered and Troy Tulowitzki drove in a pair of runs for to help the Rockies win their home opener, 5-1.
Another win on Saturday would mark the first time in the Rockies' 23 year history that they'll have opened a year with five straight wins.
Cubs starter Travis Wood (0-1) was tagged for three runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings, as they fell for the second time in three tries to open the year.
"We didn't get the big hit and they did," said Cubs manager Joe Maddon. "We played a pretty good game."
Chicago won five of its seven matchups with the Rockies last season.
