Brewers blank Pirates for first win

Apr 12, 2015 - 4:44 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jimmy Nelson threw seven scoreless innings and combined with two relievers on a two-hitter, as the Milwaukee Brewers finally broke into the win column with a 6-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night at Miller Park.

Jean Segura clubbed a two-run homer and Hector Gomez keyed a three-run second inning with a two-run double for the Brewers, who were the only team without a victory entering the evening after the White Sox won Saturday afternoon.

Nelson (1-0), Milwaukee's fifth starter, was brilliant, striking out nine and walking just two. He allowed only a first-inning infield single to Francisco Cervelli and a seventh-inning base hit by Starling Marte.

"Nelson established the fastball early, but had a really nice slider and curveball," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke. "We did a lot of great things today. This is the kind of game I hope we play a lot of this season."

Will Smith and Jonathan Broxton each tossed a perfect inning to complete the shutout.

Vance Worley (0-1) was tagged for all six runs in defeat for Pittsburgh, which had picked up its first win of the season on Friday with a 6-2 triumph in the series opener. Worley allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out four in 6 1/3 innings.

The Pirates played without All-Star outfielder Andrew McCutchen because of a sore left knee. He likely could have pinch-hit and is expected to be in the lineup on Sunday.

Adam Lind led off the Milwaukee second with a single, took third on a double by Aramis Ramirez and scored on a grounder by Khris Davis. After Segura walked, Gomez doubled to the wall in left-center to score both runners for a 3-0 advantage.

Davis doubled to start the home fourth and Segura followed with a blast over the wall in left-center field to make it 5-0.

Nelson cruised through four innings, allowing only Cervelli to reach twice. After Cervelli singled in the first, he was thrown out trying to steal. The Pittsburgh catcher was hit by a pitch in the fourth and was erased when Neil Walker grounded into a double play.

Marte and Pedro Alvarez drew walks to start the Pittsburgh fifth, but Nelson got Corey Hart to hit into a double play before Andrew Lambo flied to left. After Segura's two-out single in the seventh, Alvarez was caught looking at strike three to end Nelson's stellar outing.

"He had a lot of good things going on," said Pirates manager Clint Hurdle about Nelson.

The Brewers tacked on another run in the home seventh when Gomez doubled into the left field corner and scored on Carlos Gomez's double to center.

Game Notes

Lind finished 1-for-4 and his nine hits tied a record for most hits through five games as a Brewer, matching the mark set by Paul Molitor in 1978 and tied by Dave Parker in 1990 ... Pittsburgh's Francisco Liriano was scratched from his Sunday start, going on the paternity list after his wife gave birth to a daughter Friday. The Pirates recalled pitcher Casey Sadler from Triple-A Indianapolis to start Sunday ... The Brewers will send season-opening starter Kyle Lohse to the hill.
