Braves head north to face Jays
Apr 17, 2015 - 2:08 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Julio Teheran will try to win for the third time in as many starts this season on Friday night as the Atlanta Braves open up a three- game series with the Toronto Blue Jays.Teheran has allowed just one earned run in each of his first two outings, a road victory over Miami on April 6 and a 5-3 home defeat of the New York Mets on Saturday.
The 24-year-old righty was charged with three runs in total versus the Mets on two hits and four walks while striking out six over six-plus innings. He was rolling along until control issues ended his outing in the seventh inning and led to the three runs.
Teheran is set to face the Blue Jays for the second time in his career. He did not get a decision in the first meeting, giving up four runs over 4 1/3 innings.
The Braves have lost three of four following a 5-0 start and dropped Wednesday's rubber match of a three-game set with the Marlins 6-2. Cameron Maybin and Kelly Johnson both hit solo homers.
Eric Stults was hit with the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits over five innings.
"Obviously the results weren't there," said Stults. "I felt like just a couple pitches up in the zone ... Overall, I feel good. It's a long season."
The Braves begin a nine-game road trip tonight and will face Blue Jays righty Drew Hutchison.
Hutchison held the hosting New York Yankees to a run over six innings to win his season debut on April 6, but was then drilled for seven runs on seven hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings of a no-decision at Baltimore on Sunday.
The 24-year-old yielded a two-run homer in the first inning and then a three- run shot in the fifth.
Hutchison faced the Braves once before and took a loss, charged with five runs over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out seven but yielded a pair of home runs.
The Blue Jays lost three of four to the Tampa Bay Rays to begin this week, failing to earn a split of the set with Thursday's 4-2 loss. Aaron Sanchez gave up three runs over 5 1/3 innings, while Edwin Encarnacion and Devon Travis drove in runs late.
Shortstop Jose Reyes exited the game after the first inning due to nagging soreness in his left rib area. It is an injury he originally suffered on April 10 and Reyes is expected to miss at least this three-game series due to the ailment.
"I'm going to take some days off and see with some rest if that calms down a little bit and see what happens," Reyes told the Blue Jays' website.
Reyes is hitting .324 in 10 games this season with five RBI.
The Braves have won 10 of their last 13 versus the Blue Jays.
