Giants vie to end slide against D-backs
Apr 17, 2015 - 2:47 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants try to avoid an eighth loss in a row on Friday night as they play the second contest of a four-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Giants have not won since April 9 and lost a back-and-forth, 7-6 decision to the Diamondbacks on Thursday in 12 innings. Aaron Hill hit a two-run double in the 12th frame to put Arizona in front and San Francisco's Matt Duffy doubled home a run in the bottom of the inning before Randall Delgado got Joe Panik out to end the game.
Paul Goldschmidt hit a three-run homer and both A.J. Pollock and Mark Trumbo also went deep for Arizona, which had lost two straight and three of four.
"It was a war," said D-backs manager Chip Hale. "I thought we played fantastic defense."
The extra-inning result spoiled another terrific start from Arizona starter Archie Bradley.
Bradley made his major-league debut last week with six shutout innings in a win over reigning Cy Young and MVP winner Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He took the mound on Thursday opposite the 2014 World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner and was once again up to the task.
The young righty was charged with two runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Bumgarner, meanwhile, gave up four runs in seven innings in his second straight poor start since tossing seven innings of one-run ball against Arizona in the season opener on April 6.
The Giants lost their seventh straight game for the first time since 2010, getting a homer from Brandon Crawford.
Jake Peavy will look to snap San Francisco's losing streak in his second start of the season.
Peavy's season debut was delayed due to a back injury and he took a loss to San Diego on Sunday, giving up four hits and three walks with five strikeouts over four innings. One of the hits he allowed was a fourth-inning grand slam for the only runs charged against him.
The 33-year-old righty is 16-12 with a 4.35 earned run average in his career versus the Diamondbacks, who counter with the winless Josh Collmenter.
Collmenter dropped his season debut on April 6 to the Giants, charged with four earned runs and 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings. He fell to 5-3 with a save and 3.50 ERA in 19 games (8 starts) lifetime versus San Francisco.
The 29-year-old righty then lasted five frames in a 7-4 setback to the Dodgers on Sunday, giving up three runs on nine hits and a walk.
The Giants have won 11 of their past 15 versus the Diamondbacks.
