Iglesias lifts red-hot Tigers over White Sox

Apr 17, 2015 - 9:55 PM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Iglesias' RBI single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the red-hot Detroit Tigers over the Chicago White Sox, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game series.

After Jeff Samardzija pitched eight solid innings, the White Sox sent Zach Duke (1-1) to the mound in the ninth. Nick Castellanos led off with a hit to right that fell in front of a charging Avisail Garcia. The right fielder made a nice throw to second and shortstop Alexei Ramirez appeared to make the tag on Castellanos, who was going for a double. But Castellanos was called safe.

"The video shows what happened," Ramirez said. "It was clear. I'm 100 percent sure I tagged him."

Andrew Romine came on as a pinch-runner and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on Iglesias' hit to right-center field.

Detroit starter David Price gave up one run on four hits while striking out nine and walking two over eight innings. Joakim Soria (1-0) tossed a perfect ninth to pick up the win.

The Tigers are now 9-1 on the season, matching the 1984, 1968 and 1911 teams for the best 10-game start in club history.

"I don't put a lot of stock in yesterday, but they also can't take these wins away from us," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said.

Samardzija allowed one run on eight hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Detroit failed to score with runners on second and third with one out in the first inning. J.D. Martinez popped out and Yoenis Cespedes grounded out.

Price gave up an earned run for the first time this season when Garcia led off the second with a homer to right.

The Tigers had runners on the corners with none out in the third and came up empty again. Rajai Davis was thrown out at home when Ian Kinsler hit into a fielder's choice. Miguel Cabrera then grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Cespedes tied things up with a blast to left in the fourth. It was his first homer as a member of the Tigers.

Game Notes

The Tigers went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight ... Detroit's Victor Martinez was rested on Friday due to soreness.
