Ventura goes after third win in as many starts
Apr 18, 2015 - 11:41 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - Yordano Ventura eyes his third win in as many starts on Saturday when the Kansas City Royals continue a three-game series with the Oakland Athletics at Kauffman Stadium.Ventura rebounded from the thumb cramp that forced him out of his first start to beat the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Sunday, as he held them to a pair of runs and four hits over 5 2/3 innings to improved to 2-0 to go along with a 2.31 ERA.
However, the 23-year-old right-hander, who had words with Angels star Mike Trout in the contest, exited early with another cramp, this time in his right calf.
"It's fine," said Ventura, through interpreter Christian Colon. "It just kind of grabbed and tightened up in the sixth. I will get with the trainers to see how to fix [the cramps]."
Oakland, meanwhile, will turn to righty Jesse Hahn, who is 0-1 with a 3.09 ERA. After losing to Texas in his season debut, Hahn took a no-hitter into the fifth inning in his Sunday start against the Seattle Mariners, but didn't even complete the frame after allowing one earned run (four total) on three hits before departing with two outs.
In Friday's opener, rookie Paulo Orlando drove in the go-ahead run with a triple in the eighth inning, as Kansas City eked out a 6-4 win. The Royals pounded out 15 hits, including three each from Lorenzo Cain, Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez to help stop a two-game slide.
"We're getting it done offensively," Hosmer said. "We're putting good at-bats together."
Greg Holland pitched around a two- out walk in the ninth to lock down his fourth save of the young season.
Stephen Vogt wen 3-for-4 with a pair of solo homers, and Ike Davis added a solo blast for the A's, who have dropped two in a row.
Kansas City has won its last five versus the A's, including last season's thrilling victory in the AL Wild Card game.
