Tigers turn to Price against Yanks

Apr 22, 2015 - 10:59 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - David Price is going to be a very rich man next season.

The pending free agent tries to continue his terrific start on Wednesday when the Detroit Tigers resume a four-game set with the New York Yankees at Comerica Park.

Price hasn't received a decision since tossing 8 2/3 scoreless innings on Opening Day, but has been tremendous in his two starts since, allowing just one earned run in 13 2/3 innings. He was again marvelous on Friday versus the Chicago White Sox, but had nothing to show for it, as he gave up one run - a solo home run - and struck out nine over eight innings in his team's 2-1 win.

"That's the best I've felt all year," Price said. "I've felt better each start of the season. I felt good five days ago, and I didn't get the results I feel I should when I feel that good. But today, I got good results. It was just a great win."

Price last faced the Yankees back on Aug. 27 and had one of the worst showings of his career, as they rocked him for nine straight hits and scored eight runs off of him in third inning. In 26 games (25 starts) against the Yankees, Price is 10-6 with a 4.03 ERA, his second-highest against any AL team.

New York, meanwhile, will turn to righty Adam Warren, who is 0-1 with a 4.82 ERA. Warren did not get a decision on Friday against Tampa Bay, as he allowed four runs and six hits in four innings of a 5-4 win.

This will be Warren's first start against the Tigers, but he has faced them four times in relief and is 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA in those outings.

New York evened this series at a game apiece on Tuesday, as Nathan Eovaldi halted an eight-month winless drought by firing seven-plus strong innings to lead the Yankees to a 5-2 win.

Aided by four double plays and solo homers by Chris Young and Stephen Drew, Eovaldi (1-0) limited Detroit's powerful offense to one run on eight hits to notch his first victory since Aug. 8 of last season. The offseason acquisition had gone 0-8 with three no-decisions over his previous 11 starts.

"I was able to command the ball, I was moving it inside and out," said Eovaldi. "I was able to make the big pitches when I needed to."

Young finished 3-for-3 and ended a triple shy of the cycle, while Drew and Brett Gardner each had two hits and combined for three runs to help the Yankees hand the Tigers just their third loss in 14 games this season.

J.D. Martinez went 3-for-4 and scored both runs for Detroit, which halted New York's three-game win streak with a 2-1 triumph in Monday's opener of this four-game set.

Tigers starter Kyle Lobstein (1-1) pitched well in a tough-luck defeat, permitting only one run and three hits while walking four over six effective innings.

"The guys battled," said Tigers manager Brad Ausmus. "But obviously we fell short."

The Yankees were 4-3 against the Tigers last season.
