Hamels eyes first victory in matchup with Marlins

Apr 22, 2015 - 2:30 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels will make another attempt for his first win of the season Wednesday in the second test of a three-game series versus the Miami Marlins.

Hamels is 0-2 with a 5.00 earned run average in three starts and was roughed up in a 5-2 loss at Washington last Thursday. He gave up all five runs and five hits, including two home runs, in six innings. Hamels has given up seven home runs this season.

The 2008 World Series MVP has struggled in 34 career starts against the Marlins, going 9-14 with a 3.17 ERA, and went 0-2 in five starts in this series last season.

Philadelphia has scored no more than three runs when Hamels takes the mound this season and mustered seven in Tuesday's 7-3 triumph over the Marlins. Ryan Howard went deep for the first time this season, clubbing a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

"It's just about catching breaks," Howard said. "One day at a time, one pitch at a time, one game at a time."

Ben Revere had a two-run triple and scored on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning for the Phillies, who have won two of three games after losing six in a row. Freddy Galvis belted a two-run homer in the second inning and starting pitcher Jerome Williams picked up the win with six decent innings, touched for three runs (2 earned) and eight hits with six K's and one walk.

The Phillies will host the Atlanta Braves for three games this weekend.

Miami fell to 3-11 this season and is only 2-9 against NL East clubs.

Dan Haren was dealt the loss for allowing four runs in six innings. He gave up Howard's homer in the sixth, struck out seven and walked three batters.

"I have to try to minimize those (home runs), but the walks are a little more concerning," Haren said.

Mike Dunn gave up the three runs in the seventh inning.

Giancarlo Stanton homered and Ichiro Suzuki went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Marlins, who have lost five in a row and are 2-6 on a 10-game trek.

Jarred Cosart will make his third start of the season Wednesday for Miami and is 0-1 with a 4.76 earned run average. He lost his season debut versus Tampa Bay on April 11, tossing six innings of one-run ball in a 2-0 loss, then recorded a no-decision against the New York Mets in a 7-5 defeat last Thursday. He was tagged for five runs in 5 1/3 frames.

Cosart, a right-hander, has never faced the Phillies.

The Phillies had an 11-8 edge over Miami in last season's series.
