Angels pay a visit to the champs

May 1, 2015 - 2:22 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Angels take aim at a third victory in a row on Friday night in the opener of a three-game interleague series with the San Francisco Giants.

The Angels won the final two contests of their three-game set with the Athletics, taking Thursday's finale 6-5. Mike Trout had a pair of hits and scored two runs, but it was his leaping catch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth that was the game's biggest play.

Oakland plated three runs in the ninth to pull within one and Ike Davis crushed a 1-2 offering to the warning track in center field. But Trout tracked it the whole way and caught the ball at its highest point before giving a celebratory fist pump.

"Once Mike got back and started to settle and started his jump, we felt good that he was going to get it," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

David Freese went 3-for-5, Kole Calhoun drove in three runs and Trout recorded his second consecutive multi-hit game after going his previous 10 without one as Los Angeles won for the fifth time in seven games.

Trout has scored 20 runs and has posted an OBP of .447 on the season, while Calhoun is batting .405 with a pair of homers and eight RBI over his last nine games.

That duo may have to shoulder the load again tonight with Albert Pujols day- to-day with a hamstring injury. Pujols did not play on Thursday and the lack of a designated hitter option this weekend for the Angels could keep him sidelined until Monday.

C.J. Wilson gets the call for this opener having allowed only three earned runs over his past two starts, but he is 0-1 in that span.

The Angels lefty got a no-decision versus Texas on Saturday, charged with a run on seven hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings. Los Angeles did pull out a 4-1 win.

Wilson, 34, is 1-2 with a 3.12 earned run average this season and will face the Giants for the second time in the regular season. He beat them back on June 19, 2012 at Angel Stadium, charged with five runs -- three earned -- on 10 hits and a walk over 6 1/3 innings.

The Giants begin May with a 10-game homestand and had won five of seven prior to Wednesday's 7-3 setback to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ryan Vogelsong lasted just three innings and allowed four homers, three in the first inning.

"Ryan was flat in general," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "His pitches were elevated. He couldn't get the ball down. He just couldn't get us deep into the game."

Brandon Crawford hit a two-run homer in defeat.

Chris Heston seeks a rebound effort tonight for San Francisco. He had allowed just two earned runs over his first three outings before getting roughed up in a loss at Colorado on Friday.

The 27-year-old righty was charged with six runs and 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings, falling to 2-2 while seeing his ERA jump from 0.87 to 2.77.

"I left pitches up there. I have to work both sides of the plate," Heston said.

Heston will face the Angels for the first time.

The Angels have won six of their past seven versus the Giants, a span that includes a three-game sweep in San Francisco from June 15-17, 2009. They also beat the Giants in seven games to win the 2002 World Series.
