Hamels eyes second straight win vs. Marlins
May 2, 2015 - 1:03 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Cole Hamels tries to pick up his second victory of the season on Saturday afternoon as the Philadelphia Phillies continue a three- game series with the Miami Marlins.Hamels has allowed one or fewer run in three of his past four starts, but didn't pick up his first victory until Monday at St. Louis. The left-hander scattered a run, four hits and four walks over seven frames while striking out a season-high nine.
"I think personal wins aren't something I really focus on that much," Hamels said. "It's more for the team."
Hamels improved to 1-2 with a 3.19 earned run average and had picked up a no- decision versus Miami in his previous outing on April 22. However, he was charged with only one unearned run over six innings.
The 31-year-old is just 9-14 lifetime versus the Marlins with a 3.09 ERA in 35 starts.
The Marlins hope for another solid outing today from Dan Haren, who is off to a 2-1 start with a 3.38 ERA through four starts.
Haren picked up a 6-2 win over Washington on Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over five innings. He did give up his sixth homer of the season, but has only allowed 14 hits through 24 innings.
The right-hander took his lone loss of the season on April 21 in Philadelphia, tagged for four runs on four hits and three walks in six innings. He struck out seven, but yielded two-run homers to Freddy Galvis and Ryan Howard.
In 11 career starts against the Phillies, Haren is 1-6 with a 4.64 ERA.
Miami picked up a third straight win by taking last night's opener 4-3. Marcell Ozuna, who came in hitting .322 in his career versus the Phillies, went 4-for-4 and that included a walk-off double in the ninth inning that plated Giancarlo Stanton.
It was Ozuna's third double of the game and he also drew a walk to reach base five times.
"Big night for O," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond after his club's eighth victory in nine games. Three of those have come against the Phillies.
Dee Gordon contributed three of Miami's 14 hits and stole his ninth base of the season. Starter Tom Koehler struck out six and allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in five innings, with Steve Cishek credited with a win for pitching a scoreless top of the ninth.
All three Philadelphia runs came on Chase Utley's third homer of the season, and the Phillies finished with just five hits. Jerome Williams started and allowed three runs in five innings, and the loss went to Ken Giles for allowing Ozuna's deciding double in one-plus innings of work.
"It was good to see it early with the hits then Chase popping one out of the ballpark," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg. "But we weren't able to add on."
Philadelphia lost its fourth in a row.
The Phillies lost two of three games versus the Marlins last week at Citizens Bank Park. Miami has won six of the last eight encounters with Philadelphia.
