Gonzalez seeks to solve Mets at Citi Field

May 2, 2015 - 1:53 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Washington lefty Gio Gonzalez aims to continue his success at Citi Field, a place in which the home team has had tremendous success this season.

Gonzalez will be on the mound Saturday night when the Nationals face the New York Mets in the second installment of a three-game series.

In eight career starts at Citi Field, Gonzalez is 5-1 with a 1.88 ERA and one complete game. Gonzalez is coming off a 6-2 loss at Miami on Sunday when he was charged with all six Miami runs in five-plus innings on 10 hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. Gonzalez is 7-4 with a 3.13 ERA in 13 career games versus the Mets.

New York, which is 11-1 at Citi Field this season, counters with Jon Niese. The lefty suffered a 6-4 loss at Yankee Stadium last Sunday night when he gave up six runs -- four earned -- on eight hits over five innings. Niese is 3-3 with a 3.41 ERA in 10 starts versus the Nationals.

Michael Cuddyer's home run broke a scoreless tie and Daniel Murphy's three-run double added insurance to back a strong outing from Matt Harvey in the Mets' 4-0 win Friday night. Harvey (5-0) won his fifth straight start to begin the season, scattering five hits and a walk over seven scoreless frames. He is the first Mets pitcher to win his first five starts since Pedro Martinez in 2006.

New York halted its three-game losing streak.

"That's what the definition of an ace is," Cuddyer said of Harvey. "That's the true definition and he lived up to that tonight. And he pitched great."

Washington starter Max Scherzer (1-3) kept it a pitchers' duel most of the night until the Mets tacked on runs against the bullpen. Scherzer tossed seven innings and recorded double-digit strikeouts (10) for the first time in a Nationals uniform.

"You have to bring your 'A' game into this situation. I just got beat on a couple of pitches tonight," Scherzer said.

Michael Taylor and Wilson Ramos each had two hits in the setback.

The Nationals lost two of three meetings with New York from April 6-9 in DC, but are 12-5 in the previous 17 games in this series. In 2014, the Nationals broke Atlanta's previous record of 10 straight road wins against the Mets, which was between the 1991 and 1992 seasons, by winning 12 in a row at Citi Field. Washington has won 29 of its last 35 games at Citi Field, dating to Sept. 12, 2011.
