Tigers try to avoid the brooms in Chicago

May 7, 2015 - 11:29 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Tigers have hit a rough patch. On Thursday, they'll try to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Chicago White Sox at U.S Cellular Field.

Detroit seemed to be on its way to a win on Wednesday, but Melky Cabrera hit a game-tying three-run homer and Avisail Garcia added the go-ahead RBI single in a four-run eighth to help Chicago rally for a 7-6 win.

Jose Abreu finished with two hits and scored two runs, Micah Johnson added three hits and crossed home twice, while Conor Gillaspie posted a solo shot for the White Sox, who have taken the first two in the set after losing five straight.

"These guys keep grinding," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said of his offense. "They continued to grind and realized it was going to be there."

Zach Putnam (1-1) allowed a run in the eighth inning but earned the win, while David Robertson endured some trouble in the ninth but recorded his fifth save.

Victor Martinez hit a two-run shot and drove in four for the Tigers, who have dropped four of their last six. Rajai Davis finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Miguel Cabrera also knocked in a run.

Joba Chamberlain (0-1) took the loss and a blown save, charged with four runs on six hits while recording two outs in the deciding frame.

Heading to the hill for the Tigers on Thursday will be lefty Kyle Lobstein, who has lost two of his last three starts. Lobstein lost in Kansas City on Friday, as he allowed four runs and 10 hits in 7 1/3 innings to fall to 2-2 to go along with a 3.91 ERA.

"He's pitched well," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said. "Even (Friday), you thought he was in trouble early and he kept the Royals right where they were. So he certainly has earned a little bit (of breathing room), I think."

Lobstein lost his only other start to the White Sox, but gave up two runs in seven innings of that one.

Chicago, meanwhile, turns to a southpaw of its won in Jose Quintana, who is 1-2 with a 5.28 ERA. Quintana dropped his second straight decision on Friday in Minnesota, but pitched well, as he surrendered a run and six hits in seven innings.

Quintana is 4-2 in nine starts versus the Tigers with a 4.37 ERA.

Chicago lost two of three meetings at Detroit from April 17-19.
