Weaver goes the distance as Angels blank Astros

May 9, 2015 - 4:48 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jered Weaver went the distance, tossing a gem to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 2-0 win over the Houston Astros on Friday.

Weaver's season hadn't gone to plan to this point. He has allowed four-plus runs in four of his six starts, leading to a 6.29 ERA and 0-4 record.

But Friday could have been a turning point for the veteran righty. Weaver (1-4) gave up just three hits and struck out six without walking a batter.

"That's a terrific outing from Weaver," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "It's tough to go from where Weaver was to a complete game."

The loss spoiled a solid outing for Roberto Hernandez (1-3), who gave up both runs on six hits over 7 2/3 innings.

"He threw the ball very well," said Astros manager A.J. Hinch. "Roberto made pitches and kept us in the game."

Jose Altuve had three of Houston's six hits, but he was caught stealing twice in the loss.

The Halos pushed their only two runs across in the fifth inning.

David Freese and Erick Aybar led off with singles to put runners on the corners, and Aybar advanced to second on Johnny Giavotella's grounder back to the mound.

C.J. Cron plated the game's first run right with a sacrifice fly to right, and Carlos Perez followed with an RBI base knock into center.

Perez, who homered in his first career game on Tuesday, picked up his second career RBI.

Altuve singled in the first and third innings, but was thrown out by Perez attempting to steal both times. Luis Valbuena followed with singles in each inning and was stranded on base.

Weaver only allowed one hit after the third -- a two-out single by Altuve in the eighth inning -- as he rolled to the complete-game shutout.

Houston did not put a runner into scoring position ... Weaver tossed 77 of his 120 for strikes.
