Rays and Rangers continue set at the Trop
May 9, 2015 - 1:59 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays will battle it out in the third portion of a four-game series Saturday at Tropicana Field. The Rays took Friday's contest, 8-2, snapping the Rangers' five-game win streak.
Ross Detwiler will seek to improve on a slow start to the season as he takes the mound for Texas, while Tampa Bay counters with Matt Andriese. Andriese is taking the spot for Jake Odorizzi, who is battling an illness.
The lefty Detwiler is 0-3 this season with a 6.57 earned run average, though he pitched a stellar outing in a no-decision against Houston on Monday. Detwiler lasted seven innings and allowed four hits with one earned run in Texas's 2-1 victory over the Astros. The strong showing from Detwiler dropped his ERA from 8.66 down to its current state.
Detwiler has only appeared in two career games against Tampa Bay, with one start. In 9 2/3 innings pitched against the Rays, he has surrendered four runs and six hits, and owns a 3.72 ERA.
Andriese is 0-1 with a 5.54 earned run average in five games (2 starts) and gets the call from Triple-A Durham.
Tampa Bay won on Friday night to put a stop to Texas' streak. David DeJesus belted his second homer of the season in the second inning off Texas starter Yovani Gallardo, and the Rays never looked back.
"Other than the pitch to DeJesus, Gallardo threw the ball well," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said.
Evan Longoria, who missed Thursday's contest with flu-like symptoms, returned in a big way Friday with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI single. Tampa took a 5-0 lead into the eighth inning before Texas even got on the board.
The Rangers made it interesting with two runs in the away half of the eighth to cut the deficit to 5-2, but Tampa added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.
Nathan Karns picked up the win for the Rays, while Gallardo was hit with his fifth loss of the season.
It was the first time Karns has faced Texas in his career.
