Royals and Tigers wrap up AL Central set

May 10, 2015 - 2:12 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers will close out a three-game series Sunday night at Comerica Park.

Chris Young gets the nod for the defending AL champion Royals, while Shane Greene hits the hill for the Tigers.

Young is starting in place of the injured Jason Vargas, who is missing the contest because of an elbow injury. Young has been solid in seven appearances this season with a 2-0 record and a 1.06 earned run average. This is not Young's first spot start of the season.

Young tossed five hitless innings in a similar situation last week against the same Tigers he'll face Sunday. He picked up his second victory of the season as his Royals downed Detroit, 4-1. He also threw 2 1/3 hitless innings against Cleveland on Wednesday.

Young has been stellar in five career games versus the Tigers, posting a 3-0 record with a 1.41 ERA in 32 innings on the mound.

Greene is one of the newest members of the Tigers' pitching staff, which lost Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello in the offseason. Greene is 3-2 with a 5.56 ERA and 21 strikeouts against 11 walks in six starts.

After starting the year 3-0 with three exceptional outings, Greene has been in a downward spiral his last three appearances. On Tuesday, Greene lasted only 2 2/3 innings against the White Sox after giving up five runs and five hits with four walks in Detroit's 5-2 defeat. He hasn't gone more than 4 1/3 innings in any of his last three trips to the mound.

Kansas City was able to shake off Friday night's walk-off loss to Detroit, in which a throwing error allowed the winning run to cross home plate, by downing the Tigers Saturday, 6-2.

Alcides Escobar hit a solo homer in the first inning and ultimately drove in two runs to help Kansas City, while Eric Hosmer added two RBI of his own in the win.

Jeremy Guthrie picked up his second win of the season after starting for the Royals and pitching into the eighth inning, allowing eight hits and two runs.

"Guthrie had his best stuff of the year today," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "He threw his fastball 92-95 (mph), and was locating pitches extremely well. His secondary stuff was really good, throwing it all for strikes."

Anibal Sanchez was hit with the loss for Detroit after giving up six runs (five earned) and nine hits in six innings pitched.

Nick Castellanos was the only Detroit player to drive in runs in the contest - on a sacrifice fly in the second inning and a triple to right in the sixth.

Kansas City knotted the season series with Detroit at three games apiece with the victory on Saturday.
