Phelps gets nod for Marlins vs. Braves
May 15, 2015 - 2:49 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - David Phelps eyes another strong start on Friday when the Miami Marlins open a three-game series with the Atlanta Braves at Marlins Ballpark.Phelps struggled out of the bullpen to start the year, but injuries forced him into the rotation and he has thrived, going 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five starts. He won his most recent outing against San Francisco on Saturday, as he held the defending champs to a run and six in six innings.
"I'm not going out trying to be an ace," Phelps said. "I'm not trying to take over what (Henderson Alvarez) was doing. I'm trying to give us a chance to win every time we go out. That's what I do every time I take the hill. I try to give us a chance to win a ballgame."
Miami salvaged the finale of its three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday, as Giancarlo Stanton knocked in three runs and the Marlins eked out a 5-4 win. Dee Gordon went 4-for-5 and scored a pair of runs and Sam Dyson (2-0) picked up the win by recording the final two outs of the sixth for the Marlins, who stopped a three-game losing streak.
A.J. Ramos blanked the Dodgers in the ninth to notch his first save of the season.
Atlanta, meanwhile, has dropped five of six after losing to Cincinnati 5-1 on Wednesday. The Braves managed just two hits in that one and Eric Stults (1-4) lost his third straight start after giving up five runs on six hits over five innings.
Hoping for a better effort on Friday, the Braves will turn to righty Julio Teheran, who is 3-1 with a 4.74 ERA. Teheran did not get a decision on Saturday in Washington, but did not pitch well, as he allowed six runs and 10 hits in five innings of an 8-6 loss.
Teheran beat the Marlins on Opening Day and is 5-1 lifetime against them with a 2.64 ERA in nine starts.
Atlanta has won four of its six matchups with the Marlins this season.
