A's aim to get on track versus White Sox
May 16, 2015 - 1:24 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Sporting the worst winning percentage of any team in the American League entering the weekend, the Oakland Athletics try to win for just the second time in the last 10 outings when they host the Chicago White Sox at the Coliseum.Oakland, which is tied with Cleveland for the fewest wins in the AL with a mere 13, dropped the series opener on Friday against the White Sox by a score of 7-6, the team's second straight setback and the eighth in the last nine outings overall.
Oakland was ahead 6-2 heading into the seventh on Friday, but the White Sox exploded for five runs in the frame, en route to their 15th victory of the campaign. Adam LaRoche finished with three RBI and both Adam Eaton and Jose Abreu scored twice for Chicago.
Reliever Scott Carroll was awarded the win, his first of the season, as he allowed just one run on three hits over two innings. Chicago starter Carlos Rodon lasted four innings, permitting five runs on five hits and six walks, striking out five along the way.
Suffering the loss for the A's was Fernando Abad as he failed to retire a single batter but was charged with an earned run in the seventh inning. Jesse Hahn was in line for the win when he exited, having allowed four runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings, but it didn't hold up.
Josh Reddick had a double and a triple, leading to three RBI, while Eric Sogard notched three hits and a walk in the losing cause.
A pair of pitchers with identical 1-3 records head to the mound in Oakland tonight as John Danks steps up for the White Sox and Jesse Chavez makes the start for the A's.
Danks, a left-hander from the Lone Star State, has been with the White Sox organization since breaking into the majors in 2007, but has just a single win to show for his efforts in 2015. Last weekend Danks helped lead Chicago to a 4-3 win over Cincinnati at home, but he failed to figure into the decision.
The hurler gave up only a single run on six hits and three walks, while striking out four over the course of seven innings.
For his career, Danks has a mark of 6-3 with a 2.38 ERA in 11 all-time starts against Oakland.
While they may share the same overall record through the first six weeks of the season, the big difference between Danks and Chavez is that the former has an ERA of 5.12 and the latter's mark is exactly half that number currently.
Chavez, a product of Riverside Community College in California, had been coming out of the bullpen early on in the campaign, but has been inserted into the starting rotation to fill in some gaps. His most recent outing was last weekend when he permitted four runs on five hits and a pair of walks, while striking out seven during a loss to Seattle on the road.
Chavez did match a season high with seven strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings, but it wasn't enough to keep the A's from the 4-3 setback.
For his career, one that began with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2008 and has included a total of five clubs, Chavez has a mark of 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA in nine all-time appearances against Chicago.
