Harvey goes for Mets in battle of division leaders
May 18, 2015 - 11:36 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Harvey hopes for some run support on Monday when the New York Mets open a four-game set with the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field.Harvey was terrific against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, as he struck out nine and scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 2-1 loss. The Mets had managed just one run for him in his previous start, which resulted in his first loss of the season.
"They're a good offensive team," said Harvey, who is 5-1 with a 2.31 ERA. "Obviously the last couple of games have been really tough pitching-wise. My job is to go out there and limit the damage."
Harvey has lost both of his starts to the Cardinals and has allowed four runs in 12 innings of those outings. St. Louis is the only team that has beaten him twice.
New York enters this matchup atop the National League East after outscoring the lowly Milwaukee Brewers, 19-2, in taking the final two legs of a three- game set over the weekend. In Sunday's rubber match, Curtis Granderson led off with a homer and Noah Syndergaard won his home debut as the Mets earned a 5-1 victory.
Syndergaard (1-1) was exceptional in his second career start, save for a 97 mph pitch that got away and beaned Carlos Gomez in the helmet. The 22-year-old righty lasted six innings and allowed one run on three hits and a walk.
"Always nice getting that first W out of the way," said Syndergaard.
Lucas Duda doubled twice and drove in a run, while Michael Cuddyer knocked in a pair for the Mets, who had lost five in a row before this recent surge.
St. Louis, meanwhile, avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Detroit Tigers over the weekend, as Kolten Wong's sixth-inning home run proved to be the difference for the NL Central leaders in a 2-1 win.
Lance Lynn (3-3) tossed 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball while striking out seven for the Cardinals, who had lost the first two of this three-game series.
"Lance was great, no question about it," said Matheny. "We need somebody to step up ... and that's exactly what he did."
Getting the call for St. Louis on Monday will be righty John Lackey, who is 2-2 with a 3.22 ERA. Lackey fell for the second time in three decisions on Wednesday in Cleveland, as he surrendered two runs and five hits with five walks in 5 1/3 innings.
Lackey has faced the Mets twice and is 1-0 against them with a 2.70 ERA.
The Mets won four of seven from the Cards last season.
