Marlins will have new manager for opener with D-backs
May 18, 2015 - 11:36 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Marlins will have a new manager on Monday when they open a four-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks at Marlins Park.Miami fired Mike Redmond on Sunday afternoon after a 16-22 start to the season. The move was announced just minutes after the Marlins were nearly no- hit by Atlanta right-hander Shelby Miller.
"We haven't played to our capabilities and we're hopeful that a new voice will spark and motivate our guys to get them going," Hill said.
Redmond, a former catcher for the Marlins, was hired as manager in November 2012 and went 155-207 in two-plus seasons. His final game was Sunday's 6-0 loss to Atlanta, as the Marlins were one out away from being no hit until Justin Bour's single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
It was the Marlins' sixth loss in seven games, a stretch that has them just a half-game ahead of last-place Philadelphia in the NL East.
The team is expected to name a new manager at a news conference on Monday. Reports late on Sunday indicated that it would be former Marlins player Jeff Conine, although the team later dismissed those rumors.
Now all signs are pointing toward general manager Dan Jennings taking the reins.
Regardless, Miami will hand the ball to veteran Dan Haren on Monday, as he tries to bounce back from a miserable showing his last time out. Haren was tagged with the loss on Tuesday in Los Angeles, as the Dodgers ripped him for six runs and 11 hits in just 4 1/3 innings, dropping the right-hander to 4-2 on the year, while raising his ERA to 3.70.
"Obviously, they're a very good hitting team," said Haren, who was also hit in the wrist with a line drive. "Some of those guys have very good numbers off me in their careers. I knew it was going to be tough. I kind of navigated there through the first few innings with minimal damage. But in the fifth, things got away. A bloop hit started it all, and then they squared up a few balls pretty good."
Haren, who pitched two-plus seasons in Arizona, is 6-2 against his former team with a 3.42 ERA in eight games (7 starts).
Arizona, meanwhile, will counter with Rubby De La Rosa, who'll be trying for his third straight win.
After throwing seven scoreless innings to beat San Diego, De La Rosa defeated Washington on Tuesday, but was not as sharp, as he allowed four runs and weight hits in seven innings. Still, he improved to 4-2 to go along with a 4.50 ERA.
He also collected his first career RBI in the win.
Arizona enters this series after a three-game sweep at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies. The D=Backs were blanked 6-0 on Sunday and have lost five of their last six and seven of their last nine overall.
"It was a tough series," manager Chip Hale said. "They beat us every way they could, and we didn't respond. We're just going to have to go to Miami and figure it out."
Miami was 4-3 against the D-backs last season.
