Final/10
White Sox top Indians in 10 innings
May 19, 2015 - 4:21 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Carlos Sanchez's walk-off single in the 10th inning lifted the Chicago White Sox to a 2-1 win over the Cleveland Indians in a battle of aces.Prior to the extra-inning dramatics, Chicago starter Chris Sale and reigning Cy Young winner Corey Kluber combined for 19 strikeouts over their 17 innings of work.
"They were great," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "Everything as advertised."
Sale struck out seven and allowed a run on four hits and two walks over eight innings. Kluber, fresh off his dominating 18-strikeout performance over the St. Louis Cardinals last Wednesday, fanned 12 more. He surrendered a run on five hits and a walk over nine frames.
"He was so special," Indians manager Terry Francona said of Kluber. "He followed up that performance the other night just with a better breaking ball tonight."
Avisail Garcia began the 10th with a walk against Zach McAllister (0-2) and Conor Gillaspie singled to put runners on first and second. Alexei Ramirez popped out and Geovany Soto struck out before Sanchez poked a slicing liner down the left-field line that got past a diving Zach Walters.
Zach Duke (2-2) tossed a scoreless top of the 10th to notch the win for the White Sox, who have won six in a row.
Jose Ramirez had two hits and the lone RBI for Cleveland.
The Tribe opened the scoring in the third. Roberto Perez doubled to lead off the frame, moved to third on Jason Kipnis' bunt and scored on Jose Ramirez's sacrifice fly to right.
Chicago tied the score in the sixth.
Adam Eaton hit a one-out triple down the right-field line, and after Melky Cabrera struck out, he scored on a Kluber wild pitch. Perez was unable to block Kluber's bouncer in the dirt and the Cy Young winner failed to cover home plate. Perez, though, lunged to the plate in plenty of time to nab Eaton, but he knocked the ball loose as he slid into the plate.
