Mayberry's RBI single lifts Mets over Cardinals in 14th

May 19, 2015 - 5:17 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - John Mayberry's RBI single in the 14th inning lifted the New York Mets to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a four-game set on Monday.

Eric Campbell and Lucas Duda each worked walks off Sam Tuivailala (0-1) to open the deciding frame. Campbell moved to third after Michael Cuddyer grounded into a force out and Daniel Murphy was walked to load the bases.

On the very next pitch, Mayberry hit a soft grounder to shortstop Jhonny Peralta, who dove to stop the ball. Campbell rushed down the base path and slid into home, beating Peralta's throw for the game-winning run.

"My approach is just to get something to put in play," said Mayberry. "I was trying to be aggressive, put the ball in play and get the run in."

Lucas Duda drove in a run and Curtis Granderson doubled twice for the Mets, who had Matt Harvey's terrific outing almost spoiled after usually-reliable closer Jeurys Familia gave up the game-tying run in the ninth.

Harvey allowed just six hits and one walk and tied a season high with nine strikeouts over eight innings in the no-decision. Carlos Torres (2-2) earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings of relief.

Jason Heyward brought in the Cardinals' lone run and Yadier Molina finished with three hits and a walk. Starter John Lackey surrendered just one run on three hits with no walks and six strikeouts over seven frames.

"He was good," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said of Lackey. "He had life on the fastball. He was spotting right from the start, just making good pitches and making them come to him. He was not making mistakes."

The Mets got to Lackey in the home fourth. Granderson supplied the team's first hit with a leadoff double, moved to third on Campbell's groundout and hustled home on Duda's single up the middle.

Familia took over for Harvey in the ninth and blew his first save of the season after starting 13-for-13 in save situations. Matt Adams and Molina each singled to place runners on the corners with one out. Pinch runner Pete Kozma raced home on Heyward's sacrifice fly to right to tie the game at 1-1.

St. Louis stranded men at second in both the 11th and 12th innings. Peralta Molina each walked during the 11th, but Alex Torres came on and struck out Heyward to end the frame. Torres survived a pair of wild pitches in the 12th to keep it a tied game.

Mayberry recorded his sixth career walk-off hit ... Harvey has pitched at least six innings in a career-high 12 straight games, dating back to August 7, 2013 ... Cardinals outfielder Randal Grichuk struck out in five of his six at- bats ... The Mets improved to 16-8 all-time against the Cardinals at Citi Field ... St. Louis outfielder Matt Holliday doubled to improve his on-base streak to 36 games to start the season.
