Napoli, Ortiz help Red Sox clip Rangers

May 20, 2015 - 5:49 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Napoli and David Ortiz both hit homers and drove in two runs each, as Boston clipped Texas by a 4-3 count in the opener of a three-game series.

Hanley Ramirez ended up with two doubles among his three hits, while Dustin Pedroia also doubled twice for the Red Sox. Third baseman Pablo Sandoval left the game in the late stages and did not return after being hit with a pitch.

Wade Miley (3-4) allowed two runs on seven hits while fanning seven over seven strong innings. Koji Uehara gave up a pinch homer to Leonys Martin in the ninth but hung on to post his 10th save.

"Getting into more of the rhythm, you create a little confidence with a good (game) then another good one," Miley said.

Prince Fielder collected two of the Rangers' nine hits, with Robinson Chirinos posting an RBI triple in the setback.

Yovani Gallardo (3-6) was charged with 10 hits and four runs over his five- frame outing.

"The one to Ortiz was a pretty good pitch," Gallardo said, "but the other one to Napoli was right down the middle."

Ramirez hit a ground-rule double to start the home seventh, but Sandoval was drilled on the left knee by a Sam Freeman pitch, forcing his exit.

A Napoli fly put Ramirez and pinch-runner Brock Holt in scoring position, but Neftali Feliz got Xander Bogaerts on a grounder to end the frame after walking Shane Victorino.

Martin welcomed Uehara with a homer beyond the bullpen in right and the Rangers were within 4-3. However, Chirinos lined out, Carlos Peguero fanned and Elvis Andrus flied out to end the game with Shin-Soo Choo aboard on an infield hit.

Pedroia reached on a one-out double in the first and scored when Ortiz followed by lacing a single to center.

Napoli cleared the Green Monster on a line drive to kick off the fourth and make it 2-0 then an Ortiz blast to center and an infield RBI single from Napoli pushed the home team's lead to four in the fifth.

Texas finally responded with two in the sixth on Thomas Field's sngle and a triple by Chirinos which cut its deficit in half.

Boston dented Texas pitching for 13 hits, but finished 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 ... After Gallardo's exit, the Rangers bullpen limited the Red Sox to three hits and a walk over the final three innings ... Miley threw 106 pitches, 68 for strikes.
