Marlins hope to avoid D-backs' brooms
May 21, 2015 - 11:03 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - Mat Latos tries to put a shin injury behind him on Thursday when the Miami Marlins attempt to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks at Marlins Park.Latos had to leave Saturday's start against Atlanta after being hit in the left shin with a comebacker, but X-rays came back clean and he appears to be ready to go this afternoon.
"It's just a sore left ankle, shin area, but it looks like he's going to be fine," manager Mike Redmond said Sunday. "Like I said yesterday, X-rays were negative and it's just stiff and sore. But he should be fine."
Latos was still charged with the loss, as he allowed five runs and eight hits in just three innings, dropping him to 1-4 to go along with a 5.54 ERA.
Perhaps a visit from the D-backs will get him untracked, as Latos is 4-1 lifetime against them with a 2.61 ERA in eight starts.
Arizona righty Archie Bradley knows a little about what Latos is going through, as he was hit in the head with a line drive back on April 28. However, he was not sharp in his return on Saturday in Philadelphia, as he surrendered four runs and five hits in just two innings. He also walked three batters and fell to 2-1, while his ERA jumped nearly a run and a half to 3.27.
"Not very good," Bradley said of his performance. "When you fall behind like that and you have to come back and make pitches middle of the plate to get back in counts, you're not going to have a lot of success. (I've) just got to throw more strikes early in counts and put myself in better position."
Bradley suffered a slight sinus fracture with his comebacker, but was not thinking about it on Saturday.
"No," he said. "That was the last thing on my mind."
Arizona continued to make life miserable for the Marlins on Wednesday, as Chase Anderson pitched a gem, ending a personal eight-start winless streak and helping the Diamondbacks to a 6-1 win.
"I think he felt comfortable," said D-backs manager Chip Hale. "I think he felt like he was home pitching in Texas with the humidity."
A.J. Pollock went 3-for-4 with four runs and three steals and David Peralta had three RBI for the Diamondbacks, who are in the midst of their first three- game road win streak since June of last season.
David Phelps (2-1) yielded four runs on five hits in five innings to absorb the loss.
Miami has lost six straight games and fell to 0-3 under new manager Dan Jennings.
"This is going to turn," said Jennings. "We're in the storm right now. These guys are working. They are getting their work."
Miami was 4-3 against the D-backs last season.
