Final/13
Orioles resume set at Marlins Park
May 23, 2015 - 1:31 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Baltimore Orioles and Miami Marlins will tangle in the second leg of a three-game series Saturday at Marlins Park. The Orioles hope to get a second consecutive strong outing from Mike Wright, who hits the mound for the start for Baltimore. The Marlins will counter with seasoned veteran Dan Haren.
Wright nabbed the win in his major league debut on Sunday against the Angels, as the 25-year-old righty blanked them after throwing 7 1/3 scoreless innings.
Through that span, he allowed just four hits and was able to mow down six batters via strikeout. This will be his first road test of his big-league career.
"I just wanted to kind of savor it," Wright said after his debut. "Most of the advice I got was that you only make your debut once. There's plenty of games, but you only make your debut once, so soak it all in."
Haren last took the mound for Miami on Monday, and earned a no-decision despite pitching eight strong innings of five-hit, two-run ball against Arizona. It was Haren's first no-decision in his last seven starts. The Marlins eventually fell, 3-2, to the D-backs.
Haren comes into Saturday's clash with a 4-2 record and a 3.47 earned run average. He's struck out 33 batters this season and has walked only eight. It was a nice recovery for Haren, who was dinged up by the Dodgers in his previous start, in which he lasted 4 1/3 innings.
Baltimore overcame an early 3-0 deficit in Friday night's clash with Miami to take an 8-5 victory on the road in the opening night of the series. Manny Machado drove in three runs in the contest to lead the Orioles, and Caleb Joseph had two RBI of his own to aid the cause.
Machado cut the Miami lead to 3-2 in the fifth inning with a fielder's choice groundout that scored Joseph, then provided a two-run double to left field in the eighth inning to give his club the 8-4 advantage.
Ubaldo Jimenez got the start on the mound for the Orioles and lasted only four innings, giving up seven hits and three earned runs. Tyler Wilson picked up his first win of the season.
On the other side, Henderson Alvarez fell to 0-4 after surrendering six runs (four earned) on six hits in five innings of work.
Dee Gordon entered the night with a league-leading 64 hits, and added two more to that total. Giancarlo Stanton got the ball rolling in the first inning with a single that scored Gordon - Stanton's 40th RBI of the season that gave him the league lead.
Friday night's contest was the first meeting between the sides since the 2010 campaign.
