Marlins beat O's in 13 for Jennings' 1st win

May 24, 2015 - 5:00 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Dan Jennings caught the Orioles in a sticky situation and walked off with his first win as manager of the Marlins.

Martin Prado's RBI hit in the bottom of the 13th inning lifted Miami to a 1-0 win over Baltimore on Saturday night, snapping the team's eight-game losing streak.

It was the first win in six games under Jennings, the Marlins general manager who took over in the dugout after Mike Redmond was fired last Sunday.

"Am I thrilled to have a first win as a manager? You bet. But much more important to me as a manager is to break an eight-game losing streak," Jennings said.

Prado's bases-loaded, two-out hit to the right-center field gap scored Adeiny Hechavarria after the Orioles intentionally walked slugger Giancarlo Stanton.

It came against T.J. McFarland (0-1), who had entered the game with two outs in the 12th after Orioles reliever Brian Matusz became the second major league pitcher in three days to be ejected for having a foreign substance on his arm.

"We're not going to address the issue right now," Matusz said after the game. "Right now with emotions running high we're going to let this settle and address questions at a later time."

Just like Will Smith, the Milwaukee Brewers reliever who was ejected from a game in Atlanta on Thursday night, umpires discovered a substance on Matusz's right forearm after being prompted by Jennings to check.

Smith, who admitted he had rosin and sunscreen on his arm and had forgotten to wipe it off, was suspended for eight games by Major League Baseball.

It's common for pitchers to use a combination of rosin and sunscreen to get a better grip on the ball, but the practice is banned by MLB.

Carter Capps (1-0) had six strikeouts in just three innings and gave up only one hit to earn the win at the back end of an impressive performance by the Miami bullpen.

Sam Dyson, Mike Dunn, A.J. Ramos and Bryan Morris each pitched one inning of relief after Marlins starter Dan Haren threw six fretful frames.

Both teams had a runner thrown out at the plate. It happened to the Marlins in the 10th when Hechavarria tried to score on a pitch that bounced away from the plate.

Catcher Caleb Joseph scrambled to retrieve it and tossed to pitcher Oliver Drake, who blocked the plate with his right foot and tagged Hechavarria on the left hand as he made a head-first slide, ending the inning.

The Marlins challenged the call, which was upheld.

Earlier, Travis Snider doubled off Haren in the sixth inning and was thrown out at home plate when he tried to score on the first major league hit by Orioles starter Mike Wright, a single.

Center fielder Marcell Ozuna's accurate throw allowed catcher J.T. Realmuto to apply the tag on a close play as Snider also slid head-first to the back side of the plate.

Wright, who threw 7 1/3 shutout innings to win his major league debut last Sunday against the Angels, has still not given up a run for Baltimore.

The 25-year-old left-hander went seven innings on Saturday, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out four. The Marlins had fewer good chances against him than the Orioles had against Haren, who escaped jams in five of his six innings.

Haren gave up seven hits and three walks while striking out six. He retired the side in order for the only time in the third inning and put the first two runners on base in the first and second, only to escape.

Wright, on the other hand, faced the minimum over the first four innings because the only player to reach base, Christian Yelich, was thrown out trying to take second on a leadoff single to right fielder Delmon Young in the third inning. Yelich was called safe on the field but ruled out after an Orioles challenge.

Game Notes

The Marlins are 2-1 in extra-inning games this season and the Orioles are 1-2 ... There were four intentional walks issued in the game, including two to Stanton ... Orioles manager Buck Showalter turned 59 ... Wright has yielded just seven hits and three walks in 14 1/3 innings, striking out 10.
