Dodgers hope to get bats going against Braves

May 25, 2015 - 2:19 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Dodgers are still the top team in the NL West even though they've had trouble scoring runs lately.

They hope to break out the bats Monday in the opener of a three-game series versus the Atlanta Braves at Chavez Ravine.

Los Angeles has scored no more than three runs in the past eight games (9 total) and failed in its bid for a three-game sweep of the San Diego Padres with Sunday's lopsided 11-3 setback.

The Padres pounded out 20 hits and had a 10-0 lead by the fifth inning. They scored four runs in each of the first two innings and Dodgers starter Carlos Frias had an afternoon to forget, charged with 10 runs and 12 hits in four innings.

"Carlos threw a lot of balls over the middle of the plate," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. "It looked like he had trouble throwing strikes with his fastball. Today he couldn't recover."

Alex Guerrero hit a two-run homer during a three-run seventh inning for the Dodgers, who lost for the fifth time in eight tries.

Brett Anderson draws the start for LA Monday and he is 2-2 with a 3.61 earned run average in eight starts. Anderson lost his last outing on Wednesday in a 4-0 defeat at San Francisco and yielded three runs over 6 1/3 innings.

Anderson is 1-0 in four home starts and has never faced Atlanta.

The Braves are on the west coast for the next 10 games against Los Angeles, San Francisco and Arizona, and have won seven of their last nine games.

Atlanta took three of four games versus the Milwaukee Brewers this weekend and recorded a 2-1 victory on Sunday. Mike Foltynewicz was sharp in his start and limited the Brewers to a run and three hits in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and issued one walk.

"I was attacking the zone with the fastball and getting early outs," said Foltynewicz. "The slider and the curveball were working OK. They got a couple good hits off me at the end."

Jason Grilli struck out three in the ninth for his 13th save, while A.J. Pierzynski and Andrelton Simmons had an RBI apiece.

Williams Perez gets the nod for the Braves Monday and is 0-0 with a 6.14 earned run average in three games (1 start). Perez threw five innings of one- run ball in a 2-1 win over Tampa Bay last Wednesday and fanned seven batters.

Perez will take on the Dodgers for the first time.

Los Angeles has won eight of the last nine meetings with Atlanta and the two clubs will square off for three games at Turner Field in late July.
