Mets' Flores aims for encore against Phils

May 27, 2015 - 11:19 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - New York Mets shortstop Wilmer Flores has had a flair for the dramatic the past few games and goes for an encore performance Wednesday in the finale of a three-game set versus the Philadelphia Phillies.

Flores clubbed a three-run homer to break a tie in Monday's 6-3 win in the series opener with the Phillies and helped New York stop a three-game losing streak. He was at it again in Tuesday's middle test, stroking the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 5-4 triumph.

"I feel good," Flores said. "I feel great at the plate. I haven't changed anything, I'm just swinging at strikes and getting my pitch to hit."

Juan Lagares singled up the middle off Phillies reliever Jeanmar Gomez in the 10th, then Elvis Araujo entered and walked Lucas Duda. Philadelphia nearly worked its way through the jam once Daniel Murphy grounded into a double play, but Michael Cuddyer walked and Flores ended it with a single over shortstop.

Flores earlier tied the game at 4-4 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Phillies put four runs on the board in the top half to grab a short-lived 4-3 lead.

Cuddyer had two hits and two RBI for the Mets, who improved to 19-6 at Citi Field and were coming off a weekend sweep in Pittsburgh. Starter Jacob deGrom recorded a no-decision and struck out nine over 7 1/3 innings of two-run ball. He did not walk a batter.

New York is 7-1 against Philadelphia this season and has won 19 of the last 24 games in this rivalry. The Mets have won seven straight series against the Phillies and are unbeaten in the last six meetings at Citi Field.

The Mets, who are 19-9 against division opponents, will host the Miami Marlins for three games next.

Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard will make the fourth start of his young career against the Phillies Wednesday and is coming off a 4-1 loss at Pittsburgh on Friday. Syndergaard gave up a career-high four runs, three of which were earned, and seven hits in six innings.

Syndergaard won his previous start versus Milwaukee on May 17, tossing six innings of one-run ball in a 5-1 victory at Citi Field. He will get a taste of the rivalry with Philadelphia for the first time and has yet to face an NL East opponent. All three of his starts have come against the NL Central.

The Phillies are 3-6 on a 10-game road trip and have lost three straight and six of eight following a six-game winning streak.

Ben Revere had two hits and two RBI, Chase Utley added two hits and Carlos Ruiz finished 2-for-4 with a run scored in Tuesday's loss. Jerome Williams started for the Phillies and was reached for three runs in six innings with four strikeouts and four walks.

The bullpen walked three batters as well.

"Walks came into play," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said.

Philadelphia, which is 7-19 on the road and 10-20 against teams from the NL East, will begin a nine-game homestand this weekend versus Colorado, Cincinnati and San Francisco.

The Phils will hand the ball to Sean O'Sullivan on Wednesday and he is 1-3 with a 3.54 earned run average through five starts. O'Sullivan was dealt a hard-luck loss in Friday's 2-1 setback at Washington, charged with both runs and five hits in six innings.

O'Sullivan threw six scoreless innings in his past start on May 17 versus Arizona and has allowed five runs in his last three appearances. The right- hander will make his first career start against the Mets and threw two scoreless innings of relief.

Philadelphia is 1-4 when O'Sullivan takes the mound this season and 0-2 in his two road assignments.
