Twins complete sweep of Red Sox

May 27, 2015 - 10:32 PM Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Behind home runs from Aaron Hicks and Eddie Rosario, the Minnesota Twins earned a 6-4 win over Boston and a rare series sweep of the Red Sox.

After the Red Sox took a 2-0 lead in the third, singles from Torii Hunter and Joe Mauer put the Twins up 3-2 and they would not trail again. Phil Hughes (4-4) got the win despite allowing four runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings, and Glen Perkins recorded his 18th save in as many tries.

"We got a chance to sweep one of the best teams on paper in baseball," said Hunter. "I definitely think we're doing something right."

All four Boston runs came on a pair of two-run homers from Dustin Pedroia off Hughes.

Rick Porcello (4-4) allowed six runs on seven hits in seven innings in defeat.

Boston took its only lead when Brock Holt led off the third inning with a double and Pedroia hit his first home run of the game to left field.

That lead did not last long. After the Twins loaded the bases against Porcello with one out in the bottom of the third, Hunter fought off an inside pitch and sent it down the first-base line for a two-out single. Mauer followed with an opposite-field single that scored Brian Dozier and put Minnesota in front.

"They bunched some hits and walks together in the third inning," said Boston manager John Farrell. "After that, (Porcello) makes two elevated pitches that cost him three runs on two swings of the bat."

Porcello got into two-out trouble an inning later. Chris Herrmann's single kept the inning alive, and Hicks followed with a deep home run to right field off a hanging changeup.

In the fifth, Hughes again had trouble with Pedroia and a runner on. He turned on an inside fastball for his second home run of the day and cut Boston's deficit to 5-4.

Minnesota extended its lead in the sixth. After Eduardo Escobar singled with one out, he was erased on an attempted steal during Rosario's at-bat, which proved costly when Rosario homered to put the Twins up by two.

The Red Sox could not take advantage of an opportunity to score in the eighth, however. After Ryan Pressly got two quick outs, Aaron Thompson allowed a single to Pablo Sandoval and Michael Tonkin walked Hanley Ramirez before getting David Ortiz to hit a weak groundout to end the threat.

Perkins recorded a 1-2-3 ninth to wrap up the game.

Game Notes

Minnesota had not swept Boston since June 13-15, 2006 at Fenway Park ... The Twins have won five in a row overall ... Boston outfielder Rusney Castillo was out of the lineup with a sore shoulder ... Sandoval, a switch-hitter, chose to bat left-handed against the lefty Thompson ... The Red Sox will promote pitching prospect Eduardo Rodriguez to make his major league debut in the first of a four-game series at Texas on Thursday. The Twins will host the Blue Jays for three starting Friday.
