Kluber, Indians down Mariners
May 29, 2015 - 6:08 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Corey Kluber struck out 13 batters in seven solid innings of work and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-3 in the opener of a four-game set.Kluber (3-5), who has won three straight starts, has punched out 57 hitters over his 37 2/3 frames pitched in May. He allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk in this one.
"He works hard. He doesn't run out of gas," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said of Kluber.
Brandon Moss smacked a solo homer among his two hits and two runs scored and Jose Ramirez posted two hits and a pair of runs for Cleveland, which has won eight of its last 10 games.
Cody Allen blanked the Mariners in the ninth to notch his 10th save of the season.
Dustin Ackley cracked a two-run shot and Mike Zunino added a solo blast for the Mariners, who had won five of their last six contests coming in.
James Paxton (3-3) surrendered four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits and a walk over 4 2/3 innings before exiting with a left middle finger injury.
"We didn't want to take any chances, we'll evaluate him tomorrow," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said.
The game was tied 1-1 before the Indians plated three in the fourth to surge ahead.
Moss and Ramirez hit one-out singles before Michael Bourn walked to load the bases. Jason Kipnis lined a single to bring home Moss and Ramirez scored on a Chris Taylor's fielding error following Mike Aviles' bouncer to shortstop. Michael Brantley's groundout to first plated Bourn to give the Indians a 4-1 advantage.
Cleveland added another run in the sixth when Ramirez began the frame with a double, scampered to third on Bourn's sacrifice bunt and scored on Kipnis' roller to second.
Ackley's slicing two-run shot over the wall in left cut the deficit to 5-3 in the home half.
Earlier, Moss' towering blast to center in the second and Zunino's shot to left in the third accounted for the game's first two runs.
