Final/11
Cubs beat Royals in 11 innings
May 31, 2015 - 11:50 PM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - The windy conditions at Wrigley Field helped David Ross plate the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning of the Chicago Cubs' 2-1 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.Ryan Madson (0-1) issued consecutive walks to Dexter Fowler and Kris Bryant to start the decisive frame. Jason Frasor replaced him on the mound, and Anthony Rizzo delivered what appeared to be a game-winning drive into left, but Alex Gordon's off-balance throw arrived at the plate just in time for Salvador Perez to tag a sliding Fowler.
After a lengthy video review confirmed the call and Starlin Castro was walked intentionally to load the bases, Ross popped an off-speed pitch into short left field. Shortstop Alcides Escobar retreated on the ball but with his back turned, misplayed it in the wind as Bryant scored the game-winning run.
"It was nice for that to fall in for me," said Ross.
Chicago starter Tsuyoshi Wada earned his third straight no-decision to start his season after yielding the lone run on two hits over 5 2/3 innings. Zac Rosscup (2-1) picked up the win after finishing the top of the 11th inning.
Yordano Ventura gave up one run and struck out six over seven strong frames for Kansas City.
Gordon had three of Kansas City's four hits, as the Royals lost for the fifth time in six games.
"Just tough hitting conditions for both teams," said Gordon. "Ventura had a great game, we just came up a little short."
It was scoreless until the sixth, when Lorenzo Cain's two-out walk spelled the end of Wada's outing. Travis Wood came on and walked Kendrys Morales before serving up Gordon's RBI single.
The Cubs answered an inning later, with another walk being the catalyst. Miguel Montero drew a base on balls with one out and advanced to second base on Ventura's wild pitch.
Jonathan Herrera replaced Montero as a pinch-runner and scored on Chris Coghlan's poke to center.
Coghlan had three hits to lead the Cubs, who nearly won it in the ninth. Rizzo's one-out triple put him 90 feet away, but Ross was thrown out trying to bunt for a hit and Jorge Soler went down swinging for the third out.
Game Notes
Royals right fielder Alex Rios (left hand) went 0-for-4 in his return from the disabled list ... The Royals have scored three runs or fewer in eight of their last 12 games ... The Cubs used eight pitchers, who gave up a combined four hits and five walks.
