Giavotella helps Angels sweep Tigers
Jun 1, 2015 - 4:28 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Johnny Giavotella's two-run infield single in the bottom of the eighth lifted the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday night. The Tigers opted to send David Price (4-2) out for the eighth. David Freese walked and was replaced on the basepaths by Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Chris Iannetta reached on an infield single, and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Grant Green was intentionally walked to load the bases for pinch-hitter Carlos Perez, who popped out to first.
Joba Chamberlain was called in from the bullpen to face Giavotella, whose infield single up the middle plated two runs.
"It was a great feeling coming through for the team," said Giavotella. "I was looking for a fastball and I got a slider."
Price gave up four runs on eight hits in his first loss since April 22 against the Yankees. The 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner struck out six and walked four.
"David pitched really well. An outstanding performance," said Tigers manager Brad Ausmus. "After 7 2/3 innings I thought he was done."
Los Angeles starter Matt Shoemaker allowed two runs -- one earned -- on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks over 5 1/3 innings. Joe Smith (2-2) tossed a scoreless eighth and Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth for his 17th save of the season.
The Angels completed their first four-game sweep of an opponent this season.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second. J.D. Martinez singled, moved to third on Tyler Collins' double and scored on James McCann's sacrifice fly.
The Angels went ahead with a two-run fifth. Green singled, advanced to third on Giavotella's double and crossed the plate on Erick Aybar's single to right. Mike Trout followed with an RBI single to left, but Albert Pujols flied out and Freese struck out swinging to end the frame.
Detroit tied things up in the sixth. Miguel Cabrera singled, moved to second on a passed ball and raced home when Yoenis Cespedes reached on Giavotella's throwing error.
Cespedes flied out with the bases loaded in the seventh.
