deGrom aims to extend unbeaten streak vs. Padres
Jun 1, 2015 - 2:20 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob deGrom aims to extend his unbeaten streak to four straight starts on Monday night when the New York Mets kick off a three-game set with the San Diego Padres. After allowing just one run, six hits and one walk with 17 strikeouts over consecutive wins against Milwaukee and St. Louis, deGrom did not factor into a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. He was charged with two runs on six hits over 7 1/3 frames, striking out nine without giving up a walk.
The right-hander and reigning NL Rookie of the Year is 5-4 on the year with a solid 2.71 earned run average. However, deGrom has gone 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA in three road starts and faces the Padres for the first time.
He'll follow up another solid outing from Bartolo Colon, who became the first eight-game winner in the National League with Sunday's 4-3 victory over the Miami Marlins.
Colon gave up three runs on six hits in seven innings and helped his own cause with an RBI double as New York avoided getting swept in the three-game set and sits a half-game behind the Washington Nationals for first place in the NL East.
Jeurys Familia locked up Colon's MLB high-tying victory with a five-out save, while Ruben Tejada snapped a seventh-inning tie with an RBI double. Wilmer Flores added a solo homer.
"He loves to pitch," Mets manager Terry Collins said about Familia. "He walked up to me before the game and he said, 'Get me in there.'"
Andrew Cashner tries to build off just his second victory of his tough-luck season tonight for the Padres.
San Diego is just 2-8 in Cashner's 10 starts despite the right-hander having pitched to a 3.00 ERA. That number actually rose from 2.89 last time out despite Cashner picking up a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, who he held to three runs and eight hits over a season high-tying seven innings.
"I got my slider back to where I like it," said Cashner. "I thought I could have made better pitches but my defense picked me up."
Cashner was just 5-7 in 19 starts last season despite a 2.55 ERA and is 2-7 this year following his first victory since April 19. He is 0-1 with a 4.26 ERA in six prior meetings with the Mets, including one start.
San Diego salvaged a split of its four-game set with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday with a 7-1 win. Will Middlebrooks homered and drove in three runs to pace the offense.
Jedd Gyorko had two RBI and Clint Barmes had three hits with an RBI in the win. Odrisamer Despaigne allowed one run on seven hits over eight innings of work.
The Padres and Mets split six meetings a season ago.
