Cubs start up road trip versus Marlins

Jun 1, 2015 - 2:24 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago Cubs kick off a nine-game road swing on Monday night when they enter Marlins Park for the first of three games against the Miami Marlins.

Chicago is coming off Sunday's 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals in 11 innings after Saturday's scheduled game got rained out.

Chris Coghlan notched three hits and drove in the game-tying run in the seventh inning, then David Ross later ended things on a bloop single in the 11th.

"You gotta love the fight," manager Joe Maddon said. "If you're standing or sitting in the captain's chair and you got a bunch of guys that fight like that, what else could you possibly want? We're not going to be perfect every night, of course we're going to make mistakes, but if you have that kind of fight every night, I'll take it."

The Cubs had lost four of their previous five games. They may now get shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria back in the starting lineup after he sat out Saturday and Sunday with a bruised left shoulder from an outfield collision on Friday night. Hechavarria is batting .300 on the season.

The Marlins are back home following a 2-4 road trip against the Pirates and Mets. The two wins came on back-to-back days against New York over the weekend, but the Marlins were unable to pull off the sweep on Sunday as they fell, 4-3.

Justin Bour homered in the sixth inning to tie the game up at 3-3, but reliever Steve Cishek gave up the go-ahead double to Ruben Tejada in the seventh to drop to 1-5 on the season. Three of the Mets' four runs were scored with two outs.

"This is going to turn in a positive way," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said. "But the two-out runs, it's a little demoralizing. We've got to capitalize on our opportunities when we have two outs and men in scoring position."

Jennings will give the ball to Jose Urena on Monday for his second big league start. Urena, one of the organization's top prospects, gave up five runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings at Pittsburgh last Tuesday for his first loss. This will be his first time pitching in front of the home fans as all three of his appearances this season have come on the road.

Chicago's Jason Hammel enters with a 2.98 ERA and 58 strikeouts against only seven walks in 60 1/3 innings pitched this season. The right-hander is looking to rebound from a loss at Arizona his last time out as he gave up four earned runs on five hits over seven innings.

Hammel finished with nine strikeouts and one walk and did not surrender a hit after the third inning.

This is the first time these two teams are meeting up this season. The Cubs went 4-2 against Miami in 2014.
