DeGrom, Mets shut down Padres

Jun 2, 2015 - 4:51 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - On the three-year anniversary of the New York Mets' only no-hitter, Jacob deGrom was brilliant in trying to make his own bit of history.

DeGrom took a perfect game into the sixth inning and permitted just two hits while striking out eight over eight innings as the Mets beat the San Diego Padres 7-0 on Monday.

DeGrom (6-4) tried to join Johan Santana as the only pitchers in Mets history to throw a no-hitter. Santana achieved the feat in 2012 in a gem against the St. Louis Cardinals.

"This is as good as I've ever seen (deGrom) play," Mets manager Terry Collins said.

Daniel Murphy had a monster game on the offensive end for the Mets, collecting four hits, finishing a triple shy of the cycle and driving in three with three runs scored. Ruben Tejada had three hits with two runs scored in the win.

Andrew Cashner opposed deGrom and earned an undesirable record during a career night. Cashner (2-8) struck out a career-high 12 batters but allowed six runs -- five earned -- on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The San Diego right-hander became the first pitcher in MLB history to have double-digit strikeouts and allow double-digit hits without making it through five innings.

Cashner consistently sat the Mets down via the strikeout in his outing, but he was still hit around just as often.

New York opened the scoring with two in the first inning. Tejada hit a ground- rule double with one out before Murphy singled him in for a 1-0 lead. After a strikeout of Michael Cuddyer, Wilmer Flores singled and Darrell Ceciliani reached on a throwing error by Will Middlebrooks at third that allowed Murphy to cross home.

The Mets broke the game open in the fifth. Although Cashner set his new strikeout high in the inning, Murphy chased Tejada home with a two-run homer to right, then RBI singles from Ceciliani and Juan Lagares made it 6-0.

Meanwhile, deGrom was perfect through five innings until Clint Barmes sent an outside fastball to right for a single to lead off the sixth.

"We knew going in this guy has been pitching well. He's got a good arm," Padres manager Bud Black said of deGrom. "Tonight, he was rolling."

Murphy sliced a double into the left-field corner to begin the seventh, then Flores drove him in with a single to account for the final margin.

Game Notes

The Mets struck out 16 times in the game ... Ceciliani registered his first career RBI and stolen base in the fifth inning ... Cashner's previous career high was 11 strikeouts on April 11, 2014 vs. Detroit ... Matt Kemp was thrown out by home plate umpire Dan Iassogna during the eighth inning for arguing balls and strikes. Black was then subsequently tossed from the game for defending Kemp ... The Padres have alternated losses and wins over their last five games.
