Cubs eye series win in Miami
Jun 2, 2015 - 12:07 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago Cubs got their nine-game journey off to a promising start and shoot for a series win over the Miami Marlins Tuesday night from Marlins Park. The Cubs recorded a 5-1 win over the Marlins on Monday behind a strong pitching performance from starter Jason Hammel. Hammel struck out a career- high 11 batters and scattered five hits in 6 2/3 innings.
"I'm excited about where we're at," Hammel said. "We're (winning) tight ball games."
Starlin Castro homered, while Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Jorge Soler and Addison Russell had an RBI apiece for the Cubs, who have won two in a row after losing two straight and four of five games.
Chicago is slated to visit Washington and Detroit on this road trip, and will send Kyle Hendricks to the mound Tuesday. Hendricks is 1-1 with a 3.76 earned run average in nine starts and the Cubs have won each of his last three outings. Kendricks did not record a decision in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Nationals and tossed seven innings of one-run ball.
Hendricks, a right-hander, was coming off a five-hit shutout of San Diego on May 21 and has never faced the Marlins.
The Marlins have dropped two in a row and are only 4-13 since May 15.
Young hurler Jose Urena drew the start for Miami last night and was tagged for three runs and four hits in six innings for the loss.
"As the game progressed, he got stronger," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said about Urena.
Martin Prado had two hits and Giancarlo Stanton scored on a throwing error in the fourth inning for the Marlins.
Brad Hand will handle pitching duties for the Marlins Tuesday and he is winless (0-1) in 15 games (1 start) with a 4.50 earned run average. Hand tossed five shutout innings in Wednesday 5-2 loss at Pittsburgh for the no- decision and has never faced the Cubs.
The left-hander will make his first start at home this season.
The Cubs went 4-2 against Miami in 2014 and have won five of the last seven matchups in this series. The Marlins will visit Wrigley Field for three games in early July.
