Buchholz bests Pelfrey as Red Sox nip Twins

Jun 3, 2015 - 4:42 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Clay Buchholz tossed eight scoreless innings and Boston edged Minnesota by a 1-0 count in the opener of a four-game series from Fenway Park.

Buchholz (3-6) gave up three hits and a pair of walks while fanning eight, needing only 92 pitches to finish his start. The lanky but struggling right- hander picked up his first win since May 10.

"An outstanding performance by Clay tonight, and particularly on the heels of him being a little bit under the weather the last couple of days," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "He gave us everything he had and a timely, very good performance."

Xander Bogaerts ended up with two hits and scored the lone run for the Red Sox, with Rusney Castillo picking up the lone RBI.

Mike Pelfrey (4-2) pitched well in defeat, going seven full frames and allowing a run on six hits with two walks for the Twins, who were coming off a 20-win May.

"It was well pitched obviously on both sides," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "Buchholz was good. We didn't have many opportunities to get a hit with runners in scoring position and Mike was solid throughout."

The Red Sox finally snapped the scoreless stalemate in the home seventh. Bogaerts doubled, Sandy Leon walked and the former crossed the plate as Castillo dumped a hit to center.

The rally died with the single run, as Leon was slow to move off second, and was thrown out at third by Aaron Hicks.

Buchholz ended his night by taking down Minnesota in order in the eighth, then Koji Uehara worked around a two-out walk to Trevor Plouffe to record his 11th save.

Earlier, Leon lined out with runners on the corners in the bottom of the second. Hicks walked and stole second in the fifth but was stranded after Danny Santana struck out.

Boston had Dustin Pedroia on third in the sixth with two away but failed to plate him when Hanley Ramirez lined to left.

Game Notes

Bogaerts has recorded 12 multi-hit games in 2015 ... The contest was completed in a crisp 2:21, which tied for the shortest duration of a Red Sox game this season and the shortest for a nine-inning finish .. A 7-1 Boston victory over Baltimore on Patriots' Day also lasted as long but was called due to rain after seven innings ... Buchholz has allowed five earned runs over his last four starts.
