Dodgers edge Rockies to split DH
Jun 3, 2015 - 6:17 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Guerrero smacked a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the ninth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Colorado Rockies 9-8 to split a doubleheader.Alberto Callaspo, Jimmy Rollins and Chris Heisey hit consecutive singles to load the bases against Rafael Betancourt (2-2) in the ninth. Justin Turner struck out and Joc Pederson popped out, but Guerrero's blast just cleared the glove of a leaping Charlie Blackmon in center to put the Dodgers in front.
"I thought he had it," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "I was just numb at that point."
Rockies manager Walt Weiss echoed Mattingly's statement.
"From the dugout, looked like he caught the ball," he said.
Kenley Jansen blanked the Rockies in the ninth to notch his fifth save of the year.
Pederson, who homered in the opener, posted his 16th homer of the season in Game 2. Adrian Gonzalez cracked a two-run shot and Enrique Hernandez added a solo blast for the Dodgers, who had dropped four of their last six games coming in.
Josh Ravin (1-0) picked up the final out in the eighth to get the win in his MLB debut.
Troy Tulowitzki broke a 5-5 tie with a mammoth two-run shot to center in the seventh and Brandon Barnes' RBI single in the eighth gave the Rockies an 8-5 margin.
Nick Hundley had three hits, two RBI and three runs scored for Colorado, which had won five of its last six games.
The Dodgers jumped out to an early lead after plating a run in the first and three more in the third. Hernandez's one-out homer to right began the scoring in the first, while Pederson's one-out shot to center and Gonzalez's two-run blast to right-center two batters later made it 4-0.
Colorado went ahead after pushing across two runs in the home half, another in the fourth and two in the sixth.
Blackmon's sacrifice fly and DJ LeMahieu's RBI single in the third preceded Hundley's run-scoring groundout in the fourth to trim the deficit to a run.
Ben Paulsen hit a two-out single in the sixth and scored on Hundley's two- bagger to right-center. Hundley went to third on the throw to the plate and crossed it when Brandon Barnes dumped a base hit to right, giving the Rockies a 5-4 edge.
Pederson's RBI triple into the gap in right-center tied the game in the seventh.
Game Notes
Tulowitzki's homer measured out to 455 feet ... Colorado starter David Hale allowed four runs on seven hits over six frames, while LA starter Zack Greinke surrendered five runs on 10 hits and a walk over six innings ... It was the first time all year that Greinke didn't record a quality start.
