Diamondbacks rally past Braves

Jun 4, 2015 - 6:01 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Yasmany Tomas had three hits and two runs scored, and the Arizona Diamondbacks overcame an early deficit and rallied to a 9-8 win over the Atlanta Braves in the rubber match of a three-game series.

David Peralta had two RBI, A.J. Pollock homered and scored twice and seven different players drove in at least one run for Arizona, which trailed 6-0 in the second inning.

Rubby De La Rosa lasted five innings, yielding all seven Atlanta runs on nine hits. He also matched a season high with eight strikeouts. Andrew Chafin (4-0) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief.

Freddie Freeman homered twice for Atlanta and Cameron Maybin and Nick Markakis each had three hits in the disappointing setback.

"We played good baseball on this road trip," said Freeman. "That's all you can really ask for."

Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz gave up five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings, but departed with a two-run lead. Cody Martin and Jim Johnson (1-3) were each responsible for two runs out of the bullpen.

Atlanta gave Foltynewicz plenty of early run support. Markakis doubled in Maybin with two outs in the first inning, and a Todd Cunningham single and a pair of walks loaded the bases for Maybin in the second.

He delivered, plating Andrelton Simmons and Cunningham with a single to right. Freeman followed with a three-run shot to right for a 6-0 advantage.

Cliff Pennington put the D-backs on the board with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the second, and Peralta cut the deficit in half with a two-run double to left-center an inning later.

Freeman gave the Braves an extra run of support with his solo homer with two gone in the fourth, but Arizona continued to chip away.

Pollock went deep to left-center in the home fifth and Aaron Hill plated Jarrod Saltalamacchia with a single in the sixth to trim the deficit to 7-5. Then in the seventh inning, Tomas plated Pollock with a base knock to right, and he scored on Chris Owings' bloop single later in the frame to tie the game at 7-7.

Arizona wasn't done. Saltalamacchia followed by lifting a fly ball to center field. Maybin's throw to the plate was late, and Peralta scored to give the D- backs their first lead.

"Doesn't matter what you do in the first or third inning," said Arizona manager Chip Hale," you can come up in the eighth or ninth and win the game."

Johnson's throwing error over Chris Johnson's head at third base in the eighth allowed Nick Ahmed to score Arizona's final run.

After Brad Ziegler retired the first two batters he faced in the Atlanta ninth, pinch- hitter A.J. Pierzynski made things interesting with a solo homer into the seats in center. Simmons then grounded weakly back to Ziegler to end the inning and give the side-armer his fifth save.

Atlanta outhit Arizona 13-12 ... The Braves finished a 10-game road trip at 4-6. They return home to host Pittsburgh on Friday ... Arizona is set to host the Mets in a four-game series beginning Thursday.
