Rox use 9th-inning rally to beat Dodgers
Jun 4, 2015 - 6:44 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Nolan Arenado's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a three-run rally and provided Colorado a 7-6 victory over Los Angeles on Wednesday in a marathon contest delayed at the outset by rain.Adam Liberatore began the frame by allowing a single to pinch hitter Michael McKenry, then left as Charlie Blackmon hit a double which hopped over the wall in right. Yimi Garcia (2-2) walked DJ LeMahieu and Troy Tulowitzki to force in a run and pull the Rockies within 6-5.
J.P. Howell was summoned, but a passed ball allowed Blackmon to score the tying run and move runners to second and third. Carlos Gonzalez was given a free pass with first base open, then Chris Hatcher served up Arenado's fly to left which scored LeMahieu without much difficulty.
"We've been fighting to the last out in every game," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "I think this (win) speaks volumes to what we're all about."
John Axford (1-0) worked around an Adrian Gonzalez double in the top of the ninth to earn the win.
Tulowitzki finished with two hits and drove in five for the Rockies, while Blackmon ended up 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and scored three times.
Andre Ethier knocked in two for the Dodgers. Joc Pederson homered as part of a 2-for-3 effort where he crossed home three times. Justin Turner and Gonzalez also knocked in a run each.
Tulowitzki's first-inning single scored Blackmon, but the Dodgers equalized in the second when a Yasmani Grandal base hit brought in Howie Kendrick.
Turner's fifth-inning double scored Pederson with one out and the visitors were up 2-1, then Tulowitzki cranked one deep to left with Blackmon and LeMahieu aboard for a 4-2 contest in the home portion.
The Dodgers reversed course and took a one-run lead with a three-run burst in the seventh.
Pederson reached on a one-out single, went to second on a Turner base hit and scored on a Gonzalez single. Kendrick walked against Brooks Brown and an Ethier single brought in both Turner and Gonzalez. Grandal followed with a walk, but Scott Oberg induced a rally-killing double-play grounder from Alex Guerrero.
Nonetheless, LA tacked on another run in the eighth on Pederson's two-out solo homer -- which, of course, didn't stick. It was the fifth straight game Pederson went deep.
Game Notes
Colorado's Chad Bettis worked six innings, allowing two runs -- one earned -- on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks ... LA's Mike Bolsinger lasted just five full frames and gave up four runs on six hits with three walks ... The game was delayed 2 hours, 26 minutes due to inclement weather and lasted 3 hours, 44 minutes.
