Forsythe's ninth-inning homer lifts Rays over Mariners
Jun 6, 2015 - 5:27 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Logan Forsythe's solo homer in the top of the ninth gave the Tampa Bay Rays a 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Friday.Rays starter Jake Odorizzi tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings before leaving with left oblique tightness. With two on and one out in the fifth, the right-hander threw one pitch to Logan Morrison then appeared to be favoring his left side.
Left-hander Xavier Cedeno recorded the final two outs in the fifth. Andrew Bellatti (2-0) tossed three scoreless innings and Kevin Jepsen worked around a leadoff triple in the ninth for his third save of the season.
"Felt good," said Jepsen. "Ninth inning, one-run ball game. If you don't have adrenaline in that situation, something is wrong."
Austin Jackson led off the home ninth with a triple to right-center field. But Brad Miller struck out swinging, Mike Zunino fouled out and Dustin Ackley flied out to end the game.
"We put ourselves in position time and time again to score runs, we just didn't get it done," said Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon.
Seattle starter J.A. Happ gave up six hits while striking out six over seven scoreless innings. Fernando Rodney (2-3) took the loss after giving up the homer to Forsythe.
The Mariners' best chance to score came in the seventh. Miller reached on a fielder's choice, Ackley singled and Morrison walked to load the bases with two outs. Robinson Cano grounded out to end the threat.
Nelson Cruz led off the home eighth with a single. Kevin Kiermaier followed with a diving catch in center to take a hit away from Kyle Seager. Mark Trumbo grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Game Notes
Morrison extended his hitting streak to 12 games ... Happ has not recorded a decision in his last five trips to the hill ... The Mariners went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine.
