Cardinals, Dodgers end series at Chavez Ravine

Jun 7, 2015 - 1:58 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - A battle between the top teams in the National League comes to a close Sunday night, as the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers play the finale of a four-game set at Chavez Ravine.

The Cardinals won the first two portions of this series, but dropped a 2-0 decision on Saturday and couldn't solve Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw. The left- hander struck out 11 and walked two batters over eight scoreless innings.

"I was able to get quick outs," Kershaw said. "I threw strikes and hoped for the best. It was my best slider/curveball combination (of the season)."

Yasiel Puig, who was reinstated from the disabled list, and Justin Turner had an RBI apiece, while Enrique Hernandez added two hits for the NL West-leading Dodgers, who ended a three-game slide and will host Arizona next for three games. L.A. is a half-game ahead of San Francisco in the division.

Puig hadn't played since April 24, when he went on the DL with a hamstring injury.

Zack Greinke is one of the league leaders in ERA at 1.97 and will toe the rubber tonight for Los Angeles. Greinke is 5-1 in 11 starts and is winless (0-1) in his past five trips to the hill.

Greinke did not record a decision in Tuesday's 9-8 win at Colorado and yielded five runs and 10 hits in six innings. The right-hander had given up one run or fewer in each of his previous five appearances. Greinke has a 2-1 home record in seven starts and is 9-4 with a 3.17 ERA in 14 career games, 12 of which have been starts, against the Cardinals.

The Cardinals saw their four-game winning streak come to an end and lost for just the third time in the past 13 games.

Randal Grichuk had the only hit and Jaime Garcia pitched well in defeat, charged with both runs across seven innings. He struck out six and did not issue a walk.

"It was a tough one," said Garcia. "I didn't execute some of my pitches. They were just better than us tonight."

St. Louis will visit Colorado next for three games.

Cardinals starter Lance Lynn was impressive his last time out and will try to tame the Dodgers Sunday night. Lynn threw 7 2/3 shutout innings in Tuesday's 1-0 win over Milwaukee and struck out five with one walk. Lynn is 3-1 in his last four decisions and 4-4 with a 3.03 earned run average in 11 starts.

Lynn is only 1-3 in five road starts for the Cardinals, but 3-1 with a 4.50 ERA in five career starts against the Dodgers.

The Cardinals and Dodgers are meeting for the second time this season, with St. Louis having won two of three encounters at home from May 29-31. That came after the Cardinals ousted the Dodgers in each of the previous two postseasons, the 2013 NL Championship Series and last year's NL Divisional Series.
