Giants have brooms ready for Phillies

Jun 7, 2015 - 2:01 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The defending World Series champions came into Philadelphia on a five-game losing streak. They may leave the City of Brotherly Love with a sweep of the Phillies.

The Giants won 5-4 Friday night and 7-5 Saturday afternoon, and are on the verge of sweeping a set in Philadelphia for the first time since Aug. 13-15, 2004. That was the last time San Francisco had a whitewash of the Phillies in any regular season series.

Ryan Vogelsong heads to the mound Sunday afternoon with a chance to help the visitors complete the sweep. The Giants have won six of Vogelsong's last eight starts, but he suffered the loss in his last outing, Monday against the Pirates. The right-hander, who had won his previous four decisions, allowed four runs -- three earned -- on five hits over six innings.

Vogelsong is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in six career appearances (three starts) against the Phillies. He made one start in 2014 versus Philadelphia. In that July 21 game, he was roughed up for a career-high 11 hits and four runs -- three earned -- in just three-plus innings of action of what was a no- decision.

Sean O'Sullivan counters on the hill for the Phillies. The righty didn't get a decision on Tuesday against Cincinnati when he gave up four runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings.

O'Sullivan is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in two starts versus the Giants.

On Saturday, Madison Bumgarner allowed his second career grand slam, but he was efficient otherwise to lead the Giants to victory. Bumgarner (7-2), who served up Jeff Francoeur's second career slam in the fourth inning, surrendered five runs and struck out 11 over his eight-inning, 98-pitch outing. The reigning World Series MVP also collected two hits with an RBI on the offensive end.

"It was a strange game. He threw well, a couple of hiccups, but it's hard to believe he gave up five runs the way he threw the ball," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Nori Aoki went 3-for-3, reached base in all five of his plate appearances and knocked in two for the Giants.

Severino Gonzalez (2-2), making his first career start at Citizens Bank Park, was knocked around for six runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings.

"We need length from our starting pitchers. Some of our bullpen guys have pitched a lot," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "To get length out of the starters is very important going forward."

Phillies shortstop Freddy Galvis went 0-for-3 and is now in an 0- for-29 slump.

The Giants have won nine of their last 12 games against the Phillies.
