Yanks turn to Pineda against Orioles
Jun 12, 2015 - 2:34 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Pineda had perhaps the best outing of his young career the last time he faced the Baltimore Orioles. He'll try to beat them for the third time this season on Friday when the New York Yankees start a three-game set with the O's at Camden Yards.Pineda was dominant against the Orioles back on May 10, as he struck out a career-best 16 batters. He has fanned 25 Baltimore batters in 13 1/3 innings of his two victories against them this season and is 3-0 in six career starts versus them with a 2.58 ERA.
The 26-year-old righty should be well rested and hasn't pitched since beating the Seattle Mariners back on June 1. Pineda improved to 7-2 and lowered his ERA to 3.33 in that one, but had his next turn skipped in an effort to limit his innings.
New York had its seven-game winning streak stopped with an extra-inning loss to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, but lost even more, as it was announced after the game that closer Andrew Miller was headed to the disabled list with a forearm strain.
Dellin Betances, who has allowed just one run and has struck out 54 batters in 32 1/3 innings this season, will likely assume the ninth inning role while Miller is sidelined.
"We've had to deal with (injuries) before," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We lost (Masahiro) Tanaka for six weeks and guys stepped up. It's part of the game."
Alex Rodriguez had an RBI double in the loss to the Nats and is now eight hits shy of 3,000 and just two RBI short of 2,000.
Baltimore, meanwhile, completed a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, as Adam Jones, Nolan Reimold and Manny Machado all hit solo homers in the Orioles' 6-5 victory.
The home runs backed a so-so start from Chris Tillman (4-7), who picked up his second straight win despite allowing four runs in 5 2/3 innings.
"Getting this little roll on, playing good baseball, it's just the main thing as long as you get in a little groove," said Machado. "It's a long season ahead of us, but hopefully we keep riding this wave."
Hoping to get the O's back to .500 for the first time since May 5 on Friday will be righty Ubaldo Jimenez, who has been terrific at home this season. Jimenez is 3-1 in five starts in Baltimore with a 2.06 ERA and is 3-3 on the year with a 3.02 ERA.
New York, though, has given him problems, as Jimenez is just 2-4 lifetime against them with a 5.50 ERA in seven starts.
The Yankees have won four of their seven matchups with the Orioles this season.
