Leake, Reds resume series with Cubs
Jun 13, 2015 - 2:13 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Leake takes aim at a second straight winning start Saturday evening as the Cincinnati Reds continue a four-game series with the Chicago Cubs.Leake is coming off back-to-back starts against Philadelphia, having limited the Phillies to a pair of runs over eight innings in a no-decision on June 3. That stretched Leake's winless streak to five starts in a row (0-3), but he picked up his first win since May 6 on Monday despite allowing 10 hits over six innings. However, the righty limited the damage to three runs -- two earned -- while striking out four.
Leake is now 3-4 on the year with a 4.29 earned run average and is an excellent 8-2 lifetime versus the Cubs, posting a 3.19 ERA over 17 starts. He does not have a decision in two starts versus Chicago this season, yielding four homers and striking out 13 over 14 innings.
The Cubs will look for Kyle Hendricks to pick up his third victory in four decisions this evening.
Hendricks evened his season record at 2-2 with a 3.96 ERA following Sunday's 6-3 victory over the hosting Washington Nationals. He was charged with three runs -- two earned -- over five innings, scattering six hits while striking out four and issuing zero walks.
The right-hander will be facing the Reds for the first time this season and is 1-0 in two prior starts against them with a 3.46 ERA.
The Reds evened this series at a game apiece with Friday's 5-4 victory in 10 innings. Eugenio Suarez drove in the go-ahead run with a single, putting the ball to left through a drawn-in infield to score Todd Frazier.
The run was unearned as Frazier reached base to start the inning when the Cubs' Kris Bryant bobbled his ball hit to third before making an errant throw to first that Anthony Rizzo could not pull in.
Frazier hit his 18th home run of the season to help the Reds to a fifth victory in six games, while Jay Bruce had two hits and made a big impact with a diving catch in the ninth inning that took away a potential walk-off hit for the Cubs.
"I think really the catalyst to everything was the catch Jay Bruce made in right field," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "It was a game-saver."
Price also was able to insert speedy center fielder Billy Hamilton back into the lineup on Friday after he missed three games in a row due to a left wrist injury.
However, second baseman Brandon Phillips is still day-to-day with a left groin injury. He did not start on Friday, but was able to appear as a pinch hitter.
Hector Rondon took the loss by surrendering the unearned run in the 10th inning after four Chicago relievers held the Reds scoreless in the previous four innings. Starter Jason Hammel yielded four runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and three walks in five innings.
"Just out of sync today," said Hammel. "The fact that we had a chance to still be in it and win when I left was nice because it could have been a lot worse."
Starlin Castro hit his fifth home run of the season for the Cubs, who had won four of five.
The Cubs are 5-2 against the Reds this season and have won eight of the last 10 meetings between the teams.
