Blue Jays top Red Sox for 10th straight win

Jun 13, 2015 - 11:59 PM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Russell Martin's 11th-inning home run lifted the Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox.

Since falling to seven games below .500 after the opener of a doubleheader against Washington on June 2, Toronto has won 10 straight games.

Starter R.A. Dickey allowed four runs -- three earned -- in six innings for Toronto, but its bullpen came on to fire five scoreless innings and retire 14 straight Red Sox to end the game. Aaron Loup (2-3) was credited with the win.

After allowing three runs without recording an out in Friday's nine-run, seventh-inning meltdown for Boston, Matt Barnes (2-2) took the loss when he allowed Martin's homer in a 2-0 count. Starter Clay Buchholz allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings with seven strikeouts.

"No one expected us to be this way, especially with the team we have on paper," said Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts. "Hopefully we turn things around."

David Ortiz hit his eighth home run, and Pablo Sandoval drove in two runs for the Red Sox before exiting with right quad tightness.

Boston blew an 8-1 lead in Friday's loss, but the Red Sox were able to erase a deficit of their own Saturday. Dickey cruised through the first three innings but was unable to hold a 4-0 lead handed to him by his offense. Martin's passed ball with one out moved two runners into scoring position, and Bogaerts' single scored Hanley Ramirez. Another passed ball moved runners into scoring position again, and Sandoval's single scored both to trim Toronto's lead to 4-3.

Dickey tossed a 1-2-3 fifth, but a 2-0 knuckleball in the sixth was crushed by Ortiz to tie the game at four.

The Blue Jays' bullpen took over in the seventh, and Boston had an opportunity to take its first lead. Liam Hendriks allowed three straight singles with one out, but he battled back to strike out Ortiz and Bogaerts to strand the bases loaded. Those strikeouts started a run of 14 straight batters retired by Toronto relievers, culminating in Brett Cecil's second save in as many days.

Barnes worked around a two-out single by Edwin Encarnacion to keep the Blue Jays off the board in the 10th, but Martin crushed his 2-0 pitch over the Green Monster for the decisive home run.

After Buchholz pitched a 1-2-3 first to cool off the Blue Jays offense that hung 13 runs on Boston Friday night, he allowed three straight hits to load the bases with no outs in the second. Justin Smoak struck out looking for a big out, but Kevin Pillar singled to score a run and move everyone up a base. Ryan Goins then singled to score Chris Colabello and Martin.

In the third inning, Rusney Castillo made a bid to cut Boston's deficit to 3-1, but Jose Bautista's leaping catch at the wall robbed him of a home run.

Buchholz recorded two quick outs in the fourth before running into trouble. Singles by Pillar and Goins prolonged the inning, and Jose Reyes singled to score Pillar and give Toronto a 4-0 lead.

Boston's losing streak has hit a season-long five games ... Toronto was 4- for-8 with runners in scoring position while Boston was 3-for-9 ... On Saturday, the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame inducted former major leaguers Carlos Delgado, Matt Stairs and Corey Koskie, former major league player and manager Felipe Alou and journalist Bob Elliott ... Marco Estrada will try to pitch the Blue Jays to a series sweep Sunday against Boston's Eduardo Rodriguez.
